Position: Community Construction Skills Trainer
Organization: Keepers of the Circle
Location: Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Applicants can be remote but must be willing to travel.

3 week contract minimum to full-time
Wages starting at $40/hr

About Keepers of the Circle

Keepers of the Circle is an Indigenous Hub operated by, the Temiskaming Native Women's Support Group (TNWSG), a non-profit organization founded in 1997 to promote the economic, cultural, and social equity of Indigenous women, girls, and gender diverse peoples. We aim to create pathways for Indigenous women and Two Spirit individuals to build skills and obtain employment in the skilled trades and growing new green economy.

About the Role 

Keepers of the Circle is looking for Community Construction Skills Trainers to provide hands-on green construction training for Indigenous participants as part of our Building in 4 Directions project. The aim of this project is to enhance employment opportunities in Indigenous communities across Canada through practical green construction skills training using our mobile trades trailer.

The ideal candidate should be passionate about sustainable building practices and dedicated to teaching and supporting skill development in the skilled trades. Training sessions may take place in Kirkland Lake, New Liskeard, on reserves throughout Northern Ontario, and in other regions of Canada using our mobile trades trailers. We welcome applicants from all over Canada.

The training is delivered in five-day sessions alongside a co-trainer as part of a larger team. These sessions may be scheduled throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall, and possibly during the Winter, along with other responsibilities. Trainers can commit to a minimum of a two-week block of time up to full-time employment for program delivery. A separate one-week onboarding and preparation period for trainers will be required before they begin delivering training.

Trainers will help participants build foundational residential construction skills for new builds and retrofits, with an emphasis on energy efficiency, sustainability, and healthy homes.

Training topics may include:

  • Building healthy new homes and renovating and retrofitting existing homes
  • Residential construction tools and techniques
  • Energy-efficient building practices and technologies
  • Low-carbon and low-VOC materials
  • Basic building science (thermal performance, air quality, moisture control, building envelopes)
  • Pathways into the trades

Roles & Responsibilities:

Your key responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Deliver hands-on, entry-level construction training to diverse learners.
  • Adapt and update training materials and curriculum as needed.
  • Maintain and manage tools, equipment, and training supplies.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to support program delivery.
  • Support participant intake, engagement, and access to wraparound supports.
  • Promote training through community outreach, networking, and events.
  • Use Microsoft Office for training materials, reporting, and documentation.
  • Travel to Indigenous communities in Ontario and across Canada as required.
  • Continue developing skills in construction, skilled trades, and green building practices.

Requirements and Skills:

  • Knowledge of residential construction and energy-efficient retrofits
  • Valid G driver’s license and ability to travel
  • Strong teaching, facilitation, and mentorship skills
  • Experience facilitating groups or developing training materials
  • Comfortable presenting in-person and online
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Respect for diversity and inclusion

Nice to have: 

  • Journeyperson or Red Seal certification in carpentry or another skilled trade
  • Project coordination or project management experience
  • Experience with renewable energy systems
  • Trauma-informed training experience
  • Knowledge of Indigenous languages
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities
