Position: Engagement Specialist

The Lands Branch of the Ministry of Environment is seeking a highly motivated and independent individual to work within the Landscape Planning Team. Reporting to the Landscape Planning Manager, the successful candidate will lead the team’s engagement activities related to habitat restoration and related projects in woodland caribou range in Saskatchewan. This involves engagement with multiple industries, stakeholder groups, and Indigenous communities.

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Developing and implementing policies, frameworks and principles to support effective engagement on habitat restoration projects in woodland caribou range in Saskatchewan.
  • Identifying opportunities, providing recommendations for and developing capacity-building initiatives with local communities to facilitate their involvement in the woodland caribou habitat restoration program, including developing and managing agreements, where appropriate.
  • Developing and implementing engagement strategies, including facilitating meetings and delivering presentations for various stakeholder groups including municipalities, outfitters, trappers, recreationalists, Indigenous communities, general public and industry.
  • Creating strategies for writing briefing materials, correspondence, stakeholder and Rightsholder engagement materials and Cabinet documents to guide decision-making by senior officials and to support stakeholder and Rightsholder participation in engagement activities, in a timely fashion.
  • Engaging in cross-government (i.e., federal, provincial, municipal) collaboration.

The ideal candidate for this role requires:

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to develop effective working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and Rightsholders.
  • Pro-active problem identification and solving skills, with the ability to plan and organize multiple complex projects and tasks independently.
  • The ability to clearly and concisely plan and facilitate information sessions or meetings and respond to questions to promote a greater understanding of programs.
  • The ability to provide/obtain/exchange clear and accurate information in both formal and informal settings to a variety of people (e.g. community, clients, colleagues, ministry, other governments, industry, and stakeholders) in a manner appropriate to the audience.
  • An enthusiastic team player whom tactfully and respectfully supports colleagues to promote a positive work environment.

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be obtained through the completion of a degree related to public relations, communications, natural resource management or other related equivalent along with experience planning, organizing and implementing stakeholder engagement activities. Experience in communications and a demonstrated ability to provide strategic communication planning and advice in support of priority projects and initiatives may be considered in lieu of formal education. Training from the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) would be considered an asset.

This position will require periodic travel, including to remote locations.

The position is a term position up to two years with a possiblity of extension.
