JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Geomorphologist
Department: Watershed Science and Engineering Supervisor’s Position Title: Director, Watershed Science and Engineering

JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Watershed Science and Engineering, the Geomorphologist provides expert technical leadership in geomorphology. This role involves conducting and coordinating technical peer reviews under the Conservation Authorities Act and on development applications under the Planning Act. The incumbent will ensure high-quality technical assessments in geomorphology while leading multidisciplinary collaboration, mentoring staff, and supporting policy and guideline development.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Coordinate and oversee the multidisciplinary technical peer review process under the Conservation Authorities Act and provide expert commentary on applications under the Planning Act.
2. Apply expertise in geomorphology management to support project evaluations, policy development, and technical guidance.
3. Collaborate with engineers, scientists, planners, and external stakeholders to integrate geomorphology management strategies into broader environmental and land-use planning initiatives.
4. Provide guidance, coaching, and technical support to junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-driven work environment.
5. Act as an expert resource for internal and external stakeholders, providing technical input, participating in meetings, tribunals, and hearings as an expert witness in the field of geomorphology.
6. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure consistency and compliance with internal and external standards.
7. Perform other related duties as assigned.
EFFORT
• 80% of work is conducted at a desk reviewing applications, conducting and coordinating technical analysis, and preparing reports.
• 20% of work involves field visits, site inspections, and attending meetings, which may include exposure to variable weather conditions and rough terrain.
WORKING CONDITIONS
• 80% of work is performed in a normal office environment.
• 20% of work is conducted outdoors, which may include exposure to inclement weather, uneven terrain, and potential safety hazards during site inspections.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
• Bachelor’s degree in Geology/Earth Sciences, Environmental Science (with a focus on landform analysis), Civil or Environmental Engineering (with a focus on geotechnical or earth science), or a related field; a graduate degree (M.Sc.) in Geomorphology, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Licensed as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) in Ontario.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in geomorphology, preferably within a conservation authority, government agency, or private consulting firm.
• Strong knowledge of landform processes, erosion, and slope stability, familiarity with field data collection and remote sensing, as well as the ability to interpret geotechnical and hydrological data, and climate resilience strategies.
• Knowledge of relevant provincial legislation, policies, and technical guidelines, including the Conservation Authorities Act and associated regulations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to effectively communicate technical and scientific concepts. The ability to communicate in French is an asset.
• Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams, communicate with diverse stakeholders, and foster strong working relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines effectively.
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to anticipate challenges and develop innovative solutions.
• Standard First Aid certification
• Valid “G” Class driver’s license (or equivalent) and a satisfactory driving record.
• Strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainable water resource management.
