Position: Gardener - Spiral Garden

Program Summary

The Spiral Garden is an integrated art/garden/play program for children and youth ages 6-18 yrs old, with physical disabilities and developmental delays. Lead by professional Artists and Musicians, participants will interact and play through music, visual art, movement, drama, gardening and other arts activities. CSAs support clients who require one to one facilitation so they can have a safe, successful and fun experience in Spiral Garden. Nursing support provides care for medical interventions.

Key Responsibilities

  • To lead the activity area Gardening for the duration of the Spiral Garden summer program 2025
  • To develop and deliver gardening activities, including cooking, to accommodate diverse needs of all participants in this inclusive program
  • Enable creativity and curiosity of others
  • Use a variety of organic gardening techniques and materials
  • Draw on previous knowledge of organic food gardens, native perennials, ornamentals, composting/soil amendments etc. in planning and conducting gardening activities for the Spiral Garden
  • General maintenance of garden: watering, pruning, composting etc.
  • Maintain materials, tools and other related equipment in good repair
  • Supervise and train volunteers in gardening
  • Contribute to planning meetings and daily staff meetings during program
  • Assist the safe participation of children and youth in program and activities
  • Supervise lunch/break times of participants
  • Collaborate with program staff, volunteers and families
  • Work as a team member with the Artists, Client Service Assistants, Program, Site and Care Coordinators, volunteers and other staff, in order to ensure programming goals are met, including participation in group activities
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advance a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • BFA or college diploma/certificate in horticulture, gardening, landscaping, arts or equivalent
  • Preferred education & experience in organic gardening techniques and training/skills related to children and youth with developmental and acquired disabilities
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs/22.5 kg on occasion, e.g. bags of soil
  • Proven experience in expected tasks of gardening, e.g. use of shovels, wheel-barrow or equivalent, watering large areas etc.
  • Minimum of one-year experience in the practice of gardening; 1:1 and group facilitation
  • Food Handler Certificate an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage full participation in activity area
  • Must be flexible, have the ability to assess the needs of individuals and quickly respond to those needs
  • Talent/skills in other areas such as art or music a strong asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with staff/clients/families
  • Sound judgment and ability to work independently at times
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to efficiently manage working hours
  • Excellent verbal communication skills as they relate to participants, families and other team members
  • Proficient written communication skills to write, understand, and effectively act on written materials from participants, families, and members of the staff team
