Start Date: March 2026

Hours and Location: Full time (40 hours per week) , Seasonal on Cortes Island (March - October)
Starting Wage: $27-$30 to start, depending on skill level and experience

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Hollyhock garden is a place of inspiration, joy and connection for our staff, guests and community members. The garden team provides fresh produce and edible flowers for the Hollyhock kitchen, grows plant starts for other professional gardeners on the Island and creates hundreds of flower arrangements for rooms and common spaces on campus.

The Garden Supervisor is a hands-on leadership role responsible for a high level of expertise and competency in most aspects of gardening as well as excellent organization and communication skills. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an active, outdoor environment and possesses a high level of physical endurance and the ability to work in all types of weather. You will be working with a team of 3-4 gardeners who value collaboration, learning and fun! We strive to make the garden a healthier, more productive and beautiful place every year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead by example while performing all daily garden activities, ensuring work is performed efficiently and thoroughly.
  • Perform expert pruning, plant division, and the maintenance of all perennial areas.
  • Digging production beds and seasonal bed preparation.
  • Greenhouse operations, including growing plant starts for Hollyhock and other professional gardeners on the Island, ventilation and watering.
  • Full composting cycle, including building compost and application.
  • Maintain garden paths.
  • Assist with the development of new garden areas and general work on the Hollyhock grounds.
  • General weeding.
  • Warmly welcome and answer questions from guests, staff, and community members about the garden and its practices.
  • Maintain precise records of greenhouse sowings, kitchen harvests, and the number of flower arrangements produced.
  • Ensure the garden is safe for guests and staff, use tools safely and report concerns.
  • The garden supervisor will oversee all of the garden operations on weekends with some flexibility for the occasional weekend off if needed.
  • Potential meetings with Supervisors from other departments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant commercial garden/landscape experience required
  • Strong competency in most of these areas: pruning, perennial care, greenhouse management, irrigation systems, vegetable and annual flower production.
  • Ability to oversee all aspects of a garden, with the ability to prioritize and respond to changing conditions when working alone or with the team.
  • Provide clear direction to volunteers, give and receive feedback and take initiative while working independently.
  • Comfortable with the physical nature of gardening (digging, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lbs) for full 8-hour shifts. Ability to work for long periods in a variety of conditions, including the hot sun or cold, wet, and windy days.
  • High attention to detail regarding record-keeping and production logs.
  • Excellent verbal skills and a friendly, helpful demeanor when interacting with other staff, guests and community members.
  • Ability to work a full-time schedule (40 hours/week) including weekends.

The successful candidate must be legally able to work in Canada and enjoy living in a remote setting.
