Position: Garden Manager & Children's program Instructor

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Preschool Coordinator, Community Facilities Coordinator or Director of Child Care Services, assists with the development and implementation of a gardening program, manages the garden beds and works directly with children in a variety of camps throughout the summer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Programming

  • Maintain garden beds at Nature School and Red Barn area- this includes but is not limited to weeding in and around the beds, planting, pruning, harvesting and installing support structures fro plants, row cover, maintaining pathways between beds, helping with planting schedule and development and maintaining gardening equipment.
  • Plan, implement, organize and lead garden-based activities; assist in developing a garden-based curriculum.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a comprehensive nature-based program for ages 3-15 years
  • Teach children using the First Peoples Principles of Learning, providing continuous connections to the natural world
  • Facilitate outdoor programs in all kinds of weather

Supervisory

Customer Service/Communication

  • Help to create and contribute to a nature-based community of learners
  • Embody clear, effective and compassionate communicant skills with children and caregivers
  • Exhibit mature, non-judgemental communication; providing an open environment for learning and creating connections
  • Provide respectful and nurturing interactions; understanding diverse abilities and backgrounds
  • Attend to children’s individual physical, emotional, and mental wellness needs

Safety/Risk Management

  • Monitor children in outdoor activities; conduct activities with children on an individual and group basis
  • Ensure program safety as outlined by Health Medical Safety regulations; follow protocols established by hiring organization
  • Keep program facilities and equipment safe and clean, reporting any repairs and concerns to senior staff

Administrative

  • Plan and organize garden materials
  • Keeping records and writing documentation of garden work
  • Attend regular meetings with instructors as required
  • Responsible to fill out accident report forms
  • Other related duties as assigned and may vary according to facility.

Required Qualifications:

Grade 12 plus a Certificate/Degree in education or environmental education and one year experience, including gardening, outdoor education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

BCRPA High Five - Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification (or willing to obtain)

Licensing requirements prior to start date:

  • Standard, Child safe or Emergency First Aid including CPR C,
  • 19+yrs of age,
  • Police Information Check,
  • Immunization records

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Additional training/knowledge in outdoor skills
  • Training in inquiry based learning and responsive curriculum
  • 2nd language
  • Sign language

Hours of Work and Renumeration:

  • Gardening & Instruction in Terra Nova Nature School, Beyond 4 Walls summer program
  • 35 hours per week, Total 315 hours, June 17-Aug 16, with 2 training days in May or early June
  • Start Date: Monday, June 26, 2024
  • $22.56
