Job Title: Retail and Operations Specialist (Part-Time)
Work Location: Toronto Plant Market (FB | Inst)
Location: near Bloor & Kiplling, Toronto ON (Kipling or Islington Subway)

Compensation: $20/hr + Based on experience and skill set
Job Type: Seasonal Part-Time (Flexible)

About Us:

The Toronto Plant Market and Native Plant Supply is a unique retail garden center specializing in native plants. We supply our GTA customers with 280+ native plants. We aim to provide our customers with excellent customer service based on extensive knowledge of the growth habits and ecological preferences of the plants we sell. An important aspect of our business is hosting events that focus on raising awareness about native plants, urban ecology, and sustainability. We also offer rental and gathering space for organizations and community groups aligned with our environmental and community values. We are located on Bering Avenue in Etobicoke on Treaty 13 lands.

We are seeking a motivated and versatile individual to help with our retail operations and assist with our events. This role offers the opportunity to combine two exciting areas of work: retail garden center and ecological education.

Job Overview:

This position will be responsible for assisting in day-to-day retail operations at the Plant Market, including assisting customers, managing inventory, watering and tending to plants, creating retail displays, and maintaining a tidy and accessible retail space. Additionally, they will assist with event logistics, hosting and some event planning.

Key Responsibilities:

Plant Market Retail

  • Greeting customers and providing expert advice on native plants and seeds
  • Using the Point of Sale system to process sales and handle cash
  • Watering and tending to plants
  • Opening and closing
  • Maintaining a clean and organized retail environment
  • Assisting with kid-friendly activities and hospitality
  • General site upkeep and event setup
  • Responding to messages and client inquiries via social media and email
  • Creating and maintaining retail displays and informational signage

Event Support

  • Collaborating with the Ecoman and Plant Market team on event planning and strategy
  • logistics (set-up, running the event, tear-down)
  • Welcoming attendees, preparing and serving food and beverages
  • Washing dishes and cleaning post-event

Qualifications:

  • Experience in retail and customer service
  • Passion for native plants, sustainability, and community engagement
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with the team in a dynamic, hands-on environment
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic understanding of social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Eventbrite)
  • Previous experience with point of sale systems and inventory management is an asset
  • Garden center, greenhouse or horticulture experience is an asset

Additional Details:

  • This is a seasonal position. Our high season runs from mid-April to mid-July. During that time, we are looking for an employee who can be available from Wednesday through Sunday. (33-36 hours per week) Starting in July, the position becomes a weekend position (Saturday and Sunday) with the potential to also include a Wednesday Shift. (12 - 20 hours per week). We wrap up our retail operation in end of October. There may be occasional days when you are requested to work additional hours for events.
  • This position requires the ability to work in varied weather conditions. It can be very hot in the summer and cold in the spring and fall. Walking and standing for most of the day is the norm. The ability to bend and lift 30 lbs+ is required.
