Position: Warehouse Assistant

  • Wage: Starting at $24.36 per hour
  • Schedule: 30 hours per week: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Thursday.  With flexibility based on operational needs

ROLE SUMMARY

LUSH Valley is seeking a Warehouse Assistant to support operations for LUSH Valley programs operating out of the warehouse: Good Food Box, Fruit Tree and Farm Gleaning and Healthy Student Meals. This role supports the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations in the warehouse and the delivery of warehouse programs. This role will work closely with and under the supervision of the Acting Warehouse Manager.

The ideal candidate has a diverse skill set that allows them to take initiative, be flexible and quick to pivot, and able to work within various programs as a member of a dynamic team. Candidates should be skilled at customer service, logistics, problem-solving, managing data, and working as part of a team. Must hold a Class 5 drivers license with a clean driver’s abstract and be comfortable driving a cargo van. The physical ability to lift 60+ pounds and perform repetitive physical tasks such as carrying, lifting and sorting boxes of produce is required. Knowledge of food systems, food security, and local farming is an asset.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL DUTIES [~30%]

  • Receiving, sorting and packing produce
  • Picking up produce from local farms and farmers’ markets
  • Managing inventory: conducting weekly counts, receiving orders, rotating products, and monitoring quality and food safety
  • Cleaning and organizing the warehouse, dry food storage, and walk-in cooler, ensuring food is being stored appropriately
  • Managing garbage, compost, and recycling as needed
  • Tracking cross-program food sharing data
  • Collecting and recording impact data in tracking platforms (including Google Sheets and Monday) in a timely way to support reporting
  • Conducting surveys to elicit feedback from program participants and facilitators
  • Presenting information and data to staff for meetings, presentations, and reports as needed
  • Responding to data inquiries from other departments as needed
  • Working with the Warehouse team to debrief and plan weekly scheduling
  • Covering Warehouse Manager tasks as needed when the Acting Manager is away
  • Assisting with food preparation, fundraising events and outreach as needed
  • Attending organizational events and staff meetings as needed
  • Understanding and adhering to organizational policy, specifically health and safety policies and protocols
  • Assisting with other organizational tasks as needed

GOOD FOOD BOX PROGRAM [~40%]

  • Coordinating and supervising volunteers to pack Good Food Boxes two to three times weekly
  • Ensuring quality control and proper food-handling procedures are followed during packing
  • Working jointly with other staff to ensure coverage of all weekly Good Food Box pick up time slots
  • Assisting community partners, volunteer drivers, and GFB clients when picking up their orders
  • Receiving and confirming payments via cash, e-transfer, Square, and Local Line platform
  • Providing a positive and stigma-free pickup or delivery experience to all Good Food Box clients
  • Monitoring and responding to program-related emails including inquiries, payments, orders, etc.
  • Support the Warehouse Manager in using the Local Line platform to track sales and manage orders, payments, and client details
  • Delivering Good Food Boxes as needed

FRUIT TREE & GLEANING PROGRAMS (SEASONAL) [~20%]

  • Assisting in recruiting, coordinating and supervising volunteers on farms gleans and at fruit tree picks in backyards throughout the Comox Valley
  • Monitoring and responding to program-related emails, calls and walk-ins, including inquiries, scheduling, and site information collection
  • Assisting Warehouse Manager in efficiently scheduling fruit tree picks and farm gleans
  • Keeping accurate records of donated product, volunteer engagement, labour hours and the value of goods exchanged
  • Conducting regular inspection and sorting of gleaned products, delivering low-quality fruit to juice presses, cideries and farms as needed
  • Organizing cold storage space to ensure maximum space efficiency during harvest season

HEALTHY STUDENT MEAL PROGRAM (SEASONAL) [~10%]

  • Supervising volunteers to help pack meal kits for the Healthy Student Meal Program one day per week during school year
  • Preparing, processing and pre-packing ingredients as needed
  • Ensuring quality control and proper food-handling procedures are followed
  • Assisting with pickups of the meal kits on Monday mornings
  • Making deliveries to schools as necessary

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to adapt to dynamic responsibilities and a workload that shifts seasonally
  • Ability to organize, multitask, problem-solve, and be self-directed to prioritize and complete tasks to a high standard
  • A positive, collaborative attitude, and ability to adapt quickly to change
  • Excellent customer services skills
  • Active listening skills, and the ability to receive and incorporate feedback
  • Strong English language, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to motivate and lead a team, and work as an effective team member
  • Ability to create and maintain strong working relationships, both internally and externally
  • Ability to take care of own needs by being prepared to work in a variety of locations and conditions, particularly outdoors and in a warehouse.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of Google Workspace (including Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets)
  • Experience working with diverse groups, volunteers and children
  • Experience with working in variable temperatures, particularly outdoors or in a warehouse with exposure to hot or cold conditions.
  • Experience communicating with diverse stakeholders
  • FoodSafe Level 1 certification, or ability to get this certification
  • Class 5 driver's license with a clean driver's abstract
  • Criminal record clearance
  • Basic First Aid
  • Experience with online tracking systems, spreadsheets and sales platforms an asset
  • Farming, food security, and food systems knowledge and experience an asset
