Ship’s Cook – Live & Work Aboard a Tall Ship

Bytown Brigantine Inc – Tall Ships Adventure exists to provide education, training, and a demanding environment that inspires young people to develop leadership and self-reliance through the medium of tall ship sailing.

Aboard SV Fair Jeanne, our youth build confidence, resilience, teamwork, and lifelong friendships. As the Ship’s Cook, you are central to that experience. You are not simply preparing meals – you are sustaining a ship under sail, supporting crew morale, and helping create a safe and vibrant community at sea.This is not a typical kitchen job. It is hands-on, dynamic, and deeply rewarding.

Position Details

  • Position: Ship’s Cook, Fair Jeanne
  • Supervisor: Captain of Fair Jeanne
  • Start Date: May 20th *some flexibility for start date.
  • End Date: August 26
  • Wage: Federal Minimum Wage
  • Additional Benefits: Room & Board Included as this is a live aboard experience.

Provisioning & Logistics

  • Plan menus for 25+ trainees and crew, balancing nutrition, budget, and storage limitations
  • Provision food prior to departure and re-supply during port stops
  • Manage food inventory and minimize waste
  • Adjust menus based on weather conditions, seasickness, and schedule changes
  • Stay within budget guidelines while ensuring quality and variety.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure the galley operates in compliance with health and safety standards
  • Maintain food safety logs (temperature checks, cleaning schedules, storage monitoring)
  • Oversee safe food handling practices by trainees assisting in the galley
  • Manage allergy awareness and dietary restrictions onboard
  • Maintain safe knife handling and equipment use procedures.

Community & Culture

  • Contribute to the overall positive culture of the vessel
  • Support special meals and morale events (Captain’s Dinner, celebration nights, themed meals)
  • Mentor trainees assisting in the galley

Qualifications (Mandatory)

  • Basic food preparation skills
  • Food Handler’s Certificate
  • WHMIS certification
  • Standard First Aid
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Check

Assets

  • Experience cooking and meal planning for large groups
  • Experience working with youth
  • Previous sailing experience

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift and move food supplies
  • Comfortable working in a moving vessel environment
