Position: Cafe/Restaurant Shift Lead
Employer: Free Spirit @ Riverdale Hub
Location: Toronto ON (Greenwood & Gerrard)

The Riverdale Hub is a social enterprise in Toronto’s East End that houses the Free Spirit Restaurant, Riverdale Gallery, co-working and event spaces, and a rooftop garden. The Free Spirit Restaurant is focused on providing our customers with healthy & affordable meals whether they are just stopping in for a coffee or planning a large catered event. Position Summary:

The Shift Lead not only shares our values, but is creative, versatile, and passionate about sustainability, food security, and community.

The Shift Lead manages the operations of the restaurant, retail space, catering, and campaigns/events. The position reports to the ED and will supervise the cafe associates and participants enrolled in the Food Service & Hospitality Program at the Hub.

Key Roles/Responsibilities:

Supervision:

  • Support the ED in the hiring, supervising, training, and scheduling of employees.
  • Provide mentorship and training to Food Service & Hospitality Training program participants in food handling and preparation.

Administration:

  • Prepare daily and monthly financial reports and balance the till.
  • Manage cash, petty cash, and cash tip disbursement.
  • Conduct inventory control and place food and supply orders.
  • Track and analyze food waste.
  • Be able to do the costing of menu items and baked goods based on the costing app.

Food & Retail Service:

  • Perform barista and food preparation for the cafe/restaurant.
  • Prepare and bake all restaurant menu items.
  • Suggest, and develop new food items and baked goods.
  • Prepare catering items for events.
  • Liaise with ED and restaurant staff on retail product planning, preparation, and merchandising.

Campaigns & Promotions:

  • Prepare social media postings, newsletter blurbs, and website content for the restaurant.

General:

  • Ensure all Hub policies, Toronto Public Health regulations, and COVID-19 safety and disinfecting standards and procedures are followed.
  • Ensure equipment is in working order and arrange for repairs and maintenance as necessary.
  • Ensure maintenance of cafe, retail space, community kitchen, and patios.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of food service & hospitality experience with 1+ years of supervision experience.
  • Graduate from a Food and Hospitality training program is an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique social enterprise model.
  • Minimum of one year experience as a Barista, baker, and line cook.
  • Recipe and product development experience.
  • Knowledge of food preservation.
  • A valid Food Handler's certificate is required.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS.
  • Marketing & communications skills/experience.
  • Preliminary graphic design skills are an asset (Canva, Photoshop etc.).
  • Familiarity with Touch Bistro POS, social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Google Business), and food delivery apps (Ritual One, Door Dash, Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats).
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move product, equipment, and supplies (e.g., patio furniture, etc.).
  • Flexibility to work various shifts as needed.
  • Availability to work weekends.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, as well as independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office, G-Suite).

Hours: 35 hours/week

Salary: $25/hour; health benefits after a 4-month probationary period.
