About Shady Hazel Farm

Shady Hazel Farm is a diversified, family-run farm on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. We grow a wide variety of vegetables and specialty cut flowers for market, offer U-pick berries, flowers, and pumpkins, and raise our own livestock. Our farm values good food, good land stewardship, and a welcoming, community-oriented atmosphere. We’re hands-on, hardworking, and always striving to make our farm better.

We are seeking a motivated, experienced Farm Lead to help manage day-to-day farm operations and play a key role in production, organization, and field maintenance on the farm.


Position Overview

The Farm Lead is responsible for assisting in all the day to day operations of our small farm – seed propagation, field prep, weeding, harvesting, lawn maintenance, market prep – this role does it all. This position works closely with the farm owners Sara and Ian and may supervise other staff during the season. The ideal candidate is driven, organized, independent and comfortable taking initiative in a fast-paced seasonal environment.

This role is well-suited to someone looking to deepen their experience in diversified farming, with opportunities to contribute ideas, refine systems, and grow with the farm.


Key Responsibilities

Crop Production (Vegetables & Flowers)

  • Lead and participate in seeding, transplanting, bed preparation, cultivation, irrigation, and harvest
  • Monitor crop health and assist with pest, disease, and nutrient management
  • Help plan and execute crop successions
  • Prep flowers and arrange bouquets for wholesale and market
  • Assist with market set up, customer service and market sales

U-Pick Operations

  • Support setup, maintenance, and daily readiness of U-pick areas (berries, flowers, pumpkins)
  • Help coordinate customer flow, signage, and field presentation
  • Assist with seasonal planning for U-pick offerings

Livestock Care

  • Assist with daily care, feeding, and monitoring of livestock
  • Egg collection & washing

Farm Organization & Maintenance

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces
  • Assist with infrastructure upkeep (irrigation, fencing, wash stations, etc.)
  • Help improve systems for efficiency and workflow
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment

Qualifications & Skills

  • 2+ seasons of experience on a diversified vegetable farm (flowers, livestock, or U-pick experience is a strong asset)
  • Strong work ethic
  • Physical ability to perform repetitive farm labor in all weather conditions (must be able to lift 40lbs)
  • Proven leadership skills or readiness to step into a leadership role
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve as needed
  • Valid driver’s license preferred
