Role Summary

As an Educator, you will inspire students and communities through dynamic, conservation focused programs, delivered both in-person and virtually.

You will play a key role in making ocean literacy accessible by presenting engaging educational content, maintaining program equipment, and supporting the administrative needs of the Youth & Education team.

Whether traveling with the Ocean Wise Sea Dome or hosting virtual sessions, you will bring energy and expertise to every interaction. In addition to your Education priorities, you will support the deliver of Ocean Wise’s other Youth & Education programs as required, including the Ocean Action Grant and Youth program activities.

What You Will Be Doing
Program Delivery

  • Facilitate in-person and virtual education programs, engaging diverse audiences in formal and informal settings.
  • Travel with the Ocean Wise Sea Dome across British Columbia and other regions as required, delivering impactful ocean education experiences.
  • Provide excellent customer service to program clients, including teachers, event organizers, and participants.

Program Support

  • Assist with program logistics, including bookings, confirmation calls, and follow-up communications.
  • Maintain and care for program equipment, marine specimens, and resources to ensure smooth operations.
  • Track participant numbers and feedback for reporting and program evaluation.

Program Design and Innovation

  • Collaborate with team members to refine and enhance educational content, ensuring relevance and effectiveness.
  • Adapt programs to meet the needs of diverse audiences, including those in remote or underserved communities.

Operational Contribution

  • Demonstrate and uphold Ocean Wise’s safety standards, including emergency protocols and environmental best practices.
  • Actively support the organization’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact through sustainable operations.

What You Bring

  • Demonstrated experience in education, interpretive delivery, or related fields.
  • Hands-on experience delivering innovative educational programs for youth.
  • Knowledge of experiential and environmental education best practices, social justice concepts, and ocean conservation issues and solutions.
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences of all ages.
  • Team-oriented mindset, with the ability to collaborate effectively in small, dynamic teams.
  • Valid BC Driver’s license and comfort driving fleet vehicles (minivan, pickup truck with trailer, electric vehicle).
  • Standard First Aid required (can be obtained after employment).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other administrative tools.
  • Technical aptitude for video conferencing platforms.
  • Assets:
    • Coding and/or programming proficiency.
    • French language proficiency, including the ability to deliver programs in French.

How You Will Be Measured

  • Consistent delivery of engaging and impactful education programs, reflected in participant and client feedback.
  • Representation of Ocean Wise as a brand ambassador in schools, other institutions, and with the public, assessed by observation evaluations.
  • Achievement of program goals and objectives including participant reach, knowledge acquisition, and intent for behaviour change.
  • Maintenance of high safety standards and operational readiness for the Sea Dome, vehicles and materials.
  • Continuous enhancement of program content to align with Ocean Wise’s mission and goals.
  • Positive contributions to program innovation and team collaboration.

This full-time, benefits-eligible position offers:

  • A base salary, $48,600 – 51,300, in line with market data for not-for-profit organizations

Where and How You’ll Work

Our typical work week is 37.5 hours and requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays and outside standard business hours to deliver school programs and community events. This is a Vancouver-based role with opportunities to work remotely and/or at our headquarters in Downtown Vancouver. The role requires travel, sometimes for extended periods (up to four weeks at a time) to deliver Ocean Wise Sea Dome programming to communities across Western Canada and beyond.
This role involves driving, sitting, standing and talking for prolonged periods, exposure to outdoor environments with seasonal temperature fluctuations, and lifting heavy objects daily (up to 20Kgs to chest level). It also involves working on a computer screen for extended durations.
