As a delisted Great Lakes Area of Concern, the SSEA is committed to leading and galvanizing action to protect the lands and waters of the Severn Sound area through sound science, collaboration, and partnerships. The SSEA is a Joint Municipal Service Board under the Municipal Act that proudly serves seven municipalities in the Severn Sound watershed area (severnsound.ca).

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week with some hours required on weekends and evenings. (These hours are scheduled in advance whenever possible.)

1. SSEA Field Technician –Contract/Seasonal

Key Responsibilities:
- Support fieldwork activities, including accurate data collection, operation of field equipment, and identification of local plants, wildlife, and benthic macroinvertebrates.
- Assist with climate change and water quality monitoring programs (streams, lakes, groundwater, and benthic sampling).
- Maintain and calibrate field equipment; install, download, and remove data loggers; collect samples; and support biological sample analysis.
- Contribute to SSEA programs such as environmental monitoring, invasive species management, and habitat surveys.
- Collect, manage, and organize environmental data (rainfall, weather, water levels, streamflow, and citizen science datasets).
- Use software tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Google Drive) for data entry, analysis, reporting, and photo/record organization.
- Support outreach by promoting SSEA programs and liaising with community groups.
- Participate in weekly team meetings and prepare a final summary report.
- Perform additional duties as required to support SSEA operations.
Qualifications & Key Skills
- Post‑secondary education (completed or in progress) in environmental science, natural resources, biology, ecology, or related fields.
- Experience with fieldwork, including accurate data collection and use of technical equipment.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather, on land and water; physically able to lift equipment and work on boats.
- Strong problem‑solving skills; able to work independently and collaboratively.
- Reliable, with a flexible schedule (occasional evenings/weekends).
- Proficient with computer applications such as Zoom, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Comfortable working with volunteers; strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized and detail‑oriented.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.
- Assets: First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, OBBN certification, Pleasure Craft Operator Card, boat operation experience, and knowledge of local invasive species.
- Must be 30 years of age or under as of contract start date
2. General Field Technician – Contract/Seasonal
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with identification and become familiar with biology of local plants and animals
- Assist with all field work related to climate and water quality monitoring (e.g., accurate data recording, use of technical equipment, record keeping etc.)
- Support SSEA citizen science programs by delivering activities, training participants, and engaging diverse age groups.
- Contribute to communication materials such as fact sheets, web and social media content, reports, presentations, newsletters, and media releases.
- Represent SSEA at community events and stewardship initiatives, helping to promote SSEA programs.
- Assist with volunteer recruitment and help facilitate meetings, events, and training sessions.
- Support data management and reporting for citizen science and monitoring programs, including sharing results with participants and partners.
- Organize and maintain files, including photo archiving, data entry, graphing, and record organization.
- Support other SSEA programs by assisting with field monitoring, invasive species management, and habitat surveys, and by helping implement habitat creation and improvement projects, including coordinating volunteers for site preparation and planting activities.
- Participate in weekly meetings and write a final report, summarizing project activities
- Perform other duties as required to support SSEA operations.

3. Stewardship & Habitat Technician – Contract/Seasonal
Key Responsibilities:
- Support stewardship and habitat outreach by attending community events and engaging with local organizations, landowners, municipalities, and the public to promote actions that protect lake health, biodiversity, habitat, and water quality.
- Develop and deliver clear education and communication materials (fact sheets, web and social media content, presentations, articles, newsletters) to encourage stewardship best practices, including naturalization, habitat enhancement, invasive species management, and water quality improvement.
- Assist with identifying and become familiar with local plants and wildlife, including native species, Species at Risk, and invasive species and their impacts.
- Support planning and implementation of habitat creation and enhancement projects (tree planting, pollinator and Species at Risk initiatives, shoreline naturalization, agricultural best practices, invasive species management).
- Assist with fieldwork, including accurate data collection, equipment use, record keeping, and data processing.
- Contribute to other SSEA programs as needed, including environmental monitoring and field surveys (plants, wildlife, water quality).
- Participate in weekly meetings, track project metrics, and support preparation of summary reports.
- Perform additional duties as required to support SSEA operations.
Qualifications & Key Skills:
- Have or working towards a post-secondary education in natural resources management, environmental science, biology, ecosystem restoration, ecology, or a related area of study.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present information clearly to diverse audiences and work effectively with municipal staff, technical experts, media, and the public.
- Solid analytical, organizational, and data management skills, with the ability to think creatively and solve problems.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative, sound judgement, and effective decision‑making.
- Reliable and willing to work a flexible schedule (overtime, evenings, and weekends).
- Ability to comfortably work outdoors in a variety of conditions.
- Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s Licence with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Must be 30 years of age or under as of contract start date.
4. Communication and Outreach Assistant – Contract/Seasonal
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and design clear and compelling communication, education and outreach materials (videos, fact sheets, website and social media content, annual reports, presentations, articles, newsletters, media releases, etc.).
- Assist with optimizing social media communications.
- Attend community events to engage with the community on environmental issues.
- Assist in writing and compiling the annual report for the organization
- Foster awareness and community support for environmental initiatives – public education and outreach, attend community events, facilitate workshops, social media communication.
- Review SSEA’s website and assist with enhancements and updates.
- Help brainstorm and implement new strategies aimed at building community awareness about the work of the Severn Sound Environmental Association.
- Participate in weekly meetings and write a final report, summarizing project activities and accomplishments.
- Perform other duties as required to support SSEA operations.
Qualifications & Key Skills:
- Has or working towards a post-secondary education in communication, environmental science, or a related field.
- Excellent computer skills, with strong experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Good analytical, verbal and written communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience with social media platforms (ex. Instagram and Facebook) and content creation.
- Ability to think creatively when problem solving.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, to work collaboratively.
- Reliable and willing to work a flexible schedule (overtime, evenings, and weekends).
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with municipal staff, technical experts, media, and the public.
- Self-motivation and ability to work independently and to take initiative on projects.
- Excellent judgement and decision-making skills and innovative thinking.
- Ability to comfortably work outdoors in a variety of conditions
- Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s Licence with a clean driver’s abstract
