Job Description

The Community-Based Water Monitoring Seasonal Coordinator (Edmonton) will sample various locations in Edmonton for recreational water quality. They will also help us at events throughout the summer.

You will be reporting to our Science Manager and working alongside other staff and volunteers. We work as a team and are always willing to help each other.

This position will be primarily working outside in the field and in our lab. However some tasks will be completed from home, so reliable internet access is important. The ability and willingness to travel within Edmonton is important.

This position is equally water science and community engagement focused. Having experience or interest in both aspects is considered an asset.

Here’s what you need to do…

• Work with staff to take water samples from sites in and around Edmonton.
• Process and analyze water quality samples to test for E. coli (we will train you)
• Follow water monitoring and health and safety protocols, and ensure others are doing the same
• Manage and support the recruitment of community scientist volunteers
• Conduct Environmental Health and Safety Surveys
• Ensure proper record-keeping and data entry of water quality data
• Upload and share our findings with the community on Swim Guide, our open data portal, and through our social media and communications platforms
• Mobilize participation in the VAST platform throughout Edmonton’s river valley
• Work with local community members/groups to foster regional water literacy by leading community outreach and engagement events (with some evenings and weekends included)
• Work with our communications team to contribute to social media (take pictures/video, draft content)
• Work with our Science Manager and Manager of Technology and Innovation to compile an end-of-season report of our findings and recommendations for swimmable waters.
• Work with our Science Manager to continue updating our standard operating procedures and protocols for community-based water monitoring work

Here’s what you need to have…

• Excellent social and communication skills
• A passion for water stewardship and conservation
• A passion for working with other community members
• A commitment to following health and safety protocols
• A commitment to following scientific protocols
• Experience working collaboratively with a team
• A post-secondary background in biological or environmental science, environmental studies or a related discipline
• Be motivated and able to work independently
• Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends for community engagement activities
• Ability to regularly travel to various sites in and around Edmonton

Bonus points if you…

• Have experience with community building
• Are multilingual
• Have basic photography/videography skills
• Know (or have now googled) what a fatberg is, and you want to see more
