Position: Ecological Technician
Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Watersheds Canada
Location: Perth and surrounding areas, Ontario

The successful applicant will contribute to the stewardship and outreach work at Watersheds Canada by working to raise landowner awareness of water stewardship principles and environmental impacts on the lakes within the area.

Working with partners, organizations and individuals, the Ecological Technician Students are responsible to assist in the delivery of our program, Love Your Lake. This will include field work focusing on carrying out shoreline assessments. The students will use the Love Your Lake Protocol to assess shoreline properties and lake habitats, enter data, and delivering online workshops and presentations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Promote our program and engage new landowners in shoreline education projects.
  • Represent the project, the proponent and partners at online environmental events.
  • Solicit information from residents, attendees of local events, etc. that may contribute to data collection activities (surveys and evaluations).
  • Help organize and deliver online workshops and presentations on both our program and habitat creation topics.
  • Undertake administrative duties necessary for the execution of field work, including documentation of activities and reporting.
  • Assist in the distribution of information packages and surveys to residents of our target lakes.
  • Conduct fieldwork using the Love Your Lake Protocol and field sheets, analyze data and interpret results.
  • Submit accurate and up-to-date field records for continued data analysis and reporting.
  • Enter data into a secure database for reporting.
  • Develop copy for outreach materials and content creation for media releases, social media, blogs, and videos.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support other project components and staff as assigned by the management
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization
  • Travel using own vehicle (G license)
  • Evening and weekend work is required

Reports to: Habitat and Stewardship Program Manager

Position Location: Watersheds Canada head office, 115-40 Sunset Blvd, Perth, Ontario

Length of Contract: TBD on funding received. Anticipated start date of May 6, 2024 for 16 weeks.

Pay: $17.80 /hr

Qualification Requirements

Education:

Some College or University, with preference given to those with a specialization in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies/Sciences or Biology.

Experience:

None required, however preference will be given to those with some experience in the conservation and/or non-profit sector(s).

Skills:

  • Excellent judgment and decision making skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking and engagement of the public
  • Excellent English written and oral communication
  • Proven multi-tasking skills in a fast-paced environment, completing projects within time constraints
  • Computer skills with proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, Zoom, Google Suite, and Adobe
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Proven high level of motivation and initiative
  • Experience using ArcGIS software and portable GPS units is a strong asset
  • Fieldwork is a strong asset
  • Comfortable working on and around water
  • High attention to detail for recording field data and generating reports, planting plans
  • Ability to complete projects on time, within tight deadlines, and with limited supervision

Other:

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Able to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Some physical work, therefore ability to carry up to 50lbs is an asset
  • First-aid/CPR

Canada Summer Jobs Funding Requirements:

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of employment
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Possess a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment
