Position: Coordinator, Sustainability Programs & Services - Appendix D/Temporary Assignment (September 2025 - March 2027)

  • Rate of Pay: Payband G (Start Rate: $33.55 per hour, plus 8% in lieu of vacation and benefits)

Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability, the Coordinator, Sustainability Programs and Services will assist with the implementation of the Climate Action Plan which sets ambitious goals for Mohawk College to reach net zero operations by 2035. The incumbent will assist with the development and implementation of the Sustainability Office programs and services to support student and staff learning and engagement in sustainability practices. This position will support student projects and student groups and liaise with community organizations to further connect the College and its students with the local sustainability movement.

This position will work directly with the Sustainability Office team to develop a college wide culture which fosters individual ownership and participation in achieving the strategies and actions outlined in the Climate Action Plan.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assists the development and implementation and operates current Sustainability Office programs and services as well as new strategies and initiatives identified in the Climate Action Plan.
  • Assists in the evaluation of Sustainability practices already in use at other higher education and public sector institutions and determine their applicability to Mohawk practices. Assist in the integration of the best practices into the Mohawk Sustainability model where feasible.
  • Coordinates in the delivery of student projects, whereby students from a wide range of programs are offered the opportunity to extend learning beyond the classroom and apply their knowledge of Sustainability.
  • Works collaboratively with the Mohawk Students’ Association and other community organizations on Sustainability related programs, initiatives and services.
  • Coordinates monitoring, auditing and reporting on campus waste, as required by Ontario regulations. This includes but is not limited to coordinating annual waste audits, regulatory reporting, and creating proactive reporting and monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance and strategies to reduce waste on campus.
  • Supports evaluation and reporting on metrics of programs and services, sharing successes and opportunities to engage with the campus community.
  • Support the Manager, Sustainability on community projects, initiatives and committees external to the college.

Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • A three year diploma or degree in Environmental Science or Sustainability plus an additional professional certification related to the duties of the position or a combination of a college diploma and directly related experience.
  • Certification or qualification as an Environmental or Sustainability professional, e.g. LEED AP or a GHG-V
  • A minimum of three years’ experience, ideally in a post-secondary environment.
  • Experience in resource conservation and sustainability practices
  • Experience in the development and implementation of sustainability programs and services.
  • Experience in volunteer management.
  • Working knowledge of the GHG Protocol.
  • Understanding of GHG measurement, monitoring and management
  • Understanding of Lifecycle Assessments and project management using sustainability principles, such as evaluating embodied carbon, lifecycle assessments, and Scope 3 emissions management.
  • Solid understanding of Sustainability theory (Social, Economic and Environmental) and its applications across multiple sectors, and involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Solid understanding of sustainable procurement best practices and strategies.
  • Strong computer skills; advanced skills in Excel and project management software considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of mandatory environmental reporting requirements by public institutions and building owners above 50,000 square feet in Ontario; previous experience in regulatory reporting is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience working in multi-stakeholder projects, especially with community and institutional partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
