Position: Community-Based Monitoring Student

Are you passionate about freshwater stewardship and community-based solutions? We’re seeking an enthusiastic, organized, team player to be our Community-Based Monitoring Student!

Based out of Winnipeg with travel throughout southern Manitoba, this full-time term position is 32 hours per week, $23.00/hour, from January 12th – May 1st 2026.

LWF has implemented a reduced workweek, with staff working 32 hours/week. Our reduced workweek comes with the expectation that employees will continue to maintain 100% of the productivity of a 40-hour workweek. As such, employees will continue to receive the pay they would receive for 40 hours of work. Accordingly, the hourly wage for this position has been increased from $18.40 to $23.00.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Community-Based Monitoring Student will support planning, sample preparation and fieldwork activities of the Lake Winnipeg Community-Based Monitoring Network. Tasks will include:

• Tracking inventory and preparing sample packs for volunteers and partners
• Tracking sample and volunteer data and maintaining an up-to-date sampling database
• Assisting with volunteer recruitment and relationship building
• Assisting with delivery of sample packs and in-field training sessions for new volunteers
• Monitoring water levels online through the Water Survey of Canada website
• Communicating with volunteers and partners to coordinate sampling activities across the network
• Conducting responsive water sampling activities in southern Manitoba, using LWCBMN protocols and equipment (pending spring melt)
• Supporting the collection of responsive flow and water level data in southern Manitoba (pending spring melt)
• Supporting the communication of program outcomes to network volunteers and partners
• Assisting with the planning and execution of the LWCBMN annual gathering
• Representing LWF in a manner consistent with its mission, vision and values
• Other duties as required

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

• A combination of education/ experience in a relevant field (e.g. science; environmental science; engineering)
• Exceptional organizational skills and proven attention to detail
• Strong interpersonal communication skills
• Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability
• Energy, enthusiasm and resourcefulness
• Ability to work well in a diverse team environment
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
• Ability to undertake physical field work activities
• Experience conducting field work and managing data is an asset
• Knowledge of the Lake Winnipeg ecosystem and issues affecting lake health is an asset
• Registered driver’s licence and comfortable driving in rural Manitoba
