Position: Environmental Education & Stewardship Assistant (Co-op)

  • Term: 12 weeks with planned start date of June 1, 2026, (subject to grant funding confirmation)
  • Hours & Wage: 35-hour work week at $30/hour

Job Description:

The Loon Foundation invites enthusiastic applicants for the position of Environmental Education & Stewardship Assistant to support youth environmental education, community engagement, citizen science, and conservation programming on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. The Foundation manages the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve, Iris and Billy Griffith Nature Centre, Tranquility Garden, and the EarthFair Shop, and is developing the Pacific Ocean Discovery Station (PODS), a marine research, education, and community hub focused on coastal ecosystems, climate action, and environmental learning. This role involves delivering outdoor education programs, supporting public engagement, and contributing to ecological monitoring and stewardship activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and deliver youth summer nature camps at the Nature Reserve, facilitating fun, hands-on outdoor STEM learning focused on local ecosystems and environmental stewardship.
  • Support school field trips at the Griffith Centre.
  • Engage visitors at the EarthFair Store and PODS Showroom, sharing information about programs, coastal ecosystems, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Help plan, coordinate, and deliver community events, including the annual Sunshine Coast BioBlitz, workshops, and special events in the Tranquility Garden.
  • Assist with ecological monitoring, shoreline clean-ups, and other stewardship initiatives.
  • Support volunteer coordination and program logistics for education and stewardship activities.
  • Contribute to the development of educational materials and outreach content.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current post-secondary student in environmental studies, biology, geography, education, sustainability, or a related field.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and manage programs or events effectively.
  • Experience delivering youth environmental education or outdoor learning programs.
  • Knowledge of conservation, biodiversity, climate change adaptation, and sustainability, with an understanding of Pacific coastal ecosystems, habitats, species, and conservation challenges
  • Interest in Indigenous knowledge systems and collaborative conservation approaches.
  • Experience supporting or participating in community science, habitat enhancement, or environmental stewardship initiatives is an asset.
  • Familiarity with green technologies, renewable energy, or sustainability solutions is a plus.

Eligibility: This position will be partly funded through the Student Work Placement Program (SWPP). Eligible candidates must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary program at a recognized Canadian institution, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee status, and be legally entitled to work in Canada. A valid criminal check and screening is required upon hire.
