Position: Environmental Education Coordinator
Organization: Coastal Action
Location: Within commuting distance of Mahone Bay, NS

9-month term

Coastal Action is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic team player to fill our Environmental Education Coordinator role. This is a full-time position beginning in April and extending through December 2026.

Coastal Action is a non-profit environmental organization based in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. For over 30 years, our mission has been to protect and restore the environment through research, education, action, and community engagement. The Environmental Education Team’s primary goal is to engage children and youth in appreciating the values of nature through active learning and outdoor play. We also oversee the NS Adopt-a-Highway and NS Pick-Me-Up programs (also referred to as the Litter Programs).

Reporting to the Environmental Education Program Manager, the Environmental Education Coordinator is responsible for developing, delivering, and overseeing assigned projects as well as contributing to the growth of Coastal Action’s programming. The Project Coordinator contributes toward Coastal Action’s mission and works to achieve our vision of a healthy future for all generations through new initiatives and projects. Utilizing superior project management, time management, research, and grant writing skills, the Project Coordinator oversees an array of projects, including the Litter Programs, as directed by the Program Manager, as well as communitybased projects in partnership with other organizations. The Project Coordinator regularly consults with outside project contacts, communicating results to management, project partners, the community, and funders; and is responsible for daily supervision and mentoring of technicians/seasonal staff during peak times. Assigned projects will include the Litter Programs, and other projects will be confirmed once the successful candidate is selected, and may include Trailblazers, GO Crew, Earth Adventure Day Camps, and/or school outreach (including field trips and creating resources for teachers).

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and promote the NS Adopt-a-Highway and NS Pick-Me-Up programs.
  • Coordinate and attend outreach events for the litter and environmental education programs.
  • Plan and implement exciting experiential learning opportunities, including school activities, day camps, extracurricular programs, and family nature programs.
  • Be a leader who uses effective behaviour management and interpersonal skills to ensure that programs run safely, dynamically, and are inclusive to all participants.
  • Deliver quality adventurous programs that immerse participants in the natural world.
  • Motivate and coach field technicians and youth volunteers to reach their full potential.
  • Oversee project communication (including report writing) and partnerships with funders, partners, project consultants, and media.
  • Compile and complete reports with great attention to detail and adhere to project deadlines.
  • Following grant guidelines, create new programs, policies, manuals, and projects for successful grant applications, with support from the Program  Manager and other internal or external partners as applicable.
  • Complete required work tasks while adhering to current industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Be flexible and open to all tasks which promote, support, and facilitate all activities associated with Coastal Action.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field (e.g., recreation, education, community development, or environmental studies/science).
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in program planning/design, implementation, leadership, and evaluation, especially with youth ages 5-18.
  • Experience with community engagement outreach.
  • Interest in waste education and environmental education.
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid + CPR Level C (or equivalent) by the start date of the contract.
  • Screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a criminal records check including a vulnerable sector check (to be completed following offer of employment).
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform and multi-task in challenging work environments and weather conditions.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and efficient time management.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 applications.
  • Previous environmental/non-profit experience is considered an asset.
