Position: Program and Technical Intern

Are you passionate about engaging people with the world around them, especially young students, community volunteers, and leaders of all ages? Are you creative, curious, and enthusiastic with experience in educational and community programming and research?

The Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC) is seeking a highly motivated individual with a range of people skills and technical skills to join our team this spring and summer as Program and Technical Intern.

BARC is a registered charitable non-profit corporation formed in 1991 to represent the public interest in the restoration of Hamilton Harbour and its watershed. BARC’s mission is to deliver relevant and impactful educational programming, to create experiential opportunities for community members to activate and participate in restoration, and to provide thought leadership on water, sustainability, and climate resilience.

Purpose and Role

The Program and Technical Intern will support the Program and Technical Lead to develop and deliver educational and volunteer programming; to organize and coordinate community outreach activities; to engage with teachers, students, participants, volunteers, partners, and leaders from across the community; and to conduct research for technical projects.

The ideal candidate has post-secondary education and training in environmental sciences or related field with enthusiasm and experience in program development and delivery for students and volunteers, the capacity to engage partnering organizations and the public, and research skills to contribute to data analysis and digitial storytelling.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Deliver education programs and events at schools and other venues such as public libraries and summer camp.
• Deliver volunteer programs and events such as marsh plantings, water testing, and environmental monitoring.
• Prepare reports and analysis of data collected by staff and volunteers.
• Assist with communications such as social media posts, website content, and brochures and other materials.
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

• Eligibility requirements for Canada Summer Jobs program funding.
• Passion for the environment with some knowledge about local environmental issues.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
• Experience presenting, programming, and engaging with children, youth, adults, and the general public.
• Experience in online and in-person community engagement.
• Experience developing promotional materials and educational program content.
• Confidence in speaking and leading groups without supervision.
• Experience conducting research and preparing reports and presentations.
• Comfortable working outside and getting your hands dirty.
• A post-secondary education in the natural or social sciences or another field relevant to the position is preferred.
• Experience with ArcGIS Pro and StoryMaps would be considered a terrific asset.
• Experience engaging with Indigenous Peoples (and other racialized communities) and/or having taken Indigenous Studies courses at the undergraduate level (or comparable experiences) would also be considered a terrific asset.

Wages and Timeline

This is a full-time contract position at 35 hours per week for 16 weeks running May 4 through August 21, 2026. Start date, end date, and other scheduling issues are negotiable. Wages are $18.60 per hour and dependant on funding. Weekly schedule will vary and require evening and weekend commitments. This position is contingent on securing sufficient funding.
