Position: Communications Specialist
Organization: EcoSchools Canada

  • Eligibility: ages 21 to 30 (see below)
  • Job Start Date: July 6, 2026
  • Term: July 6, 2026 – August 28, 2026
  • Interviews: Rolling Basis
  • Hours Per Week: 35
  • Hourly Rate: $22

Location: Candidates working remotely in Canada are welcome to apply. Our office is located at King St and University Avenue, Toronto, Ontario and will be available for hybrid work if desired.

Conditions: This position is made available through grant funding and as such, the successful candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicant is available to start work on Monday, July 6, 2026
  • Applicant is between 21 and 30 years of age before the contract start date
  • Applicant must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred and have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Communications Manager, the Communications Specialist will be responsible for supporting strategies that increase EcoSchools Canada’s visibility as a leading environmental education program, strengthen its information sharing capacity with its multiple stakeholders (namely schools and school boards), support the programs team during and after school assessments and ensure the timely, and accurate execution of the organization’s communications strategy. As a bilingual organization, communications will be developed in both French and English.

Tasks and Responsibilities

1) Content Strategy and Activity Schedule

The Communications Officer will assist the Communications Department in creating and developing the 2026-2027 school year content strategy and communications activity schedule. As part of the planning, this position will be required to:

     1. Prepare meeting agendas and coordinate meeting schedules

     2. Transcribe, prepare, and send meeting notes

     3. Edit and update the communications content strategy calendar as requested by the Communications Department.

2) Social Media

Using the content strategy and communications activity schedule, the Communications Officer will prepare and upload content to various platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Hootsuite and YouTube, and prepare reports that provide the Communications Department and the senior leadership team with key analytics that help drive the organization’s overall communications strategy.

3) Content Creation and Management

The Communications Officer will contribute to ideation sessions with the Communications Department and broader EcoSchools Canada team that focus on developing compelling content. The focus will primarily be on marketing, outreach, and fundraising. The Communications Officer will also assist in managing and updating website content via WordPress, creating visual graphics and designs in programs like the Adobe Creative Suite and Canva, working extensively within Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive), and researching new communications tools and software.

4) Story Pitching and Collection

The Communications Officer will have the opportunity to pitch stories, articles, and serial content ideas to be covered in EcoSchools Canada communications and assist in conducting interviews with external stakeholders. Training and supervision will be provided to ensure the participant is supported and prepared.

5) Support the Programs Team

The Communications Officer will join the entire EcoSchools team in supporting the EcoSchools certification assessment process. Additional administrative, research and development support to programs, projects, and partnerships will also be required.

Qualifications (required)

  • University degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Personal connection and commitment to EcoSchools’ environmental and youth leadership goals. 
  • Resourcefulness and initiative to function collaboratively as part of a small team.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite programs, Hootsuite, Social Media Platforms, Wordpress
  • Results-driven work ethic.

Assets (desired)

  • Fluency in French
