Position: Nature Education Assessment Assistant
Organization: Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary
Location: Swan Lake, Victoria BC (on site)

Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary offers, on an ongoing basis, a wide range of initiatives and projects related to nature, biodiversity, ecology, environmental stewardship and conservation.

This position will be integrated in a variety of projects that range from Indigenous collaborations for ecological stewardship, to informing the public about upgrades happening at our Nature House for improved community education opportunities in the future. This role will be helping our non-profit organization as a whole in our duties as nature stewards.

This position is a good fit for you if you are outgoing and interested in making an important difference in a community-engaged environmental organization. You will work closely with the Executive Director, Operations Manager and other staff. This role requires a highly professional attitude, with a strong sense of accountability and proficiency at fully completing tasks with minimal oversight or correction.

Specifications:

  • One position available on site in Victoria, BC
  • Part time 28 hours/week for 15 weeks, ideally starting September 8th 2025 through December 19, 2025.
  • $23.00/hour, with 4% vacation pay.
  • General schedule is Tuesday through Saturday 9:00am to 4:30pm (0.5h unpaid lunch)
  • Some schedule flexibility is required to support meetings and at times, off-site events.

Duties include:

  • Be responsible for executing project plans under the direction of senior team members at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary
  • Collaborate on event planning: hosting Elders, community partners, society members and the Board of Directors, volunteers, and members of the public.
  • Help with public communications about events, and for first-time visitors to Swan Lake.
  • Support the delivery of events, workshops, programs, and meetings (sending out invitations, preparing meeting spaces, organizing refreshments, etc.)
  • Take part in community outreach regarding the stewardship activities and biodiversity work
  • Research and develop content to help create accessible nature programming for children, youth, families, adults, seniors, newcomers, and the general public.
  • Track organizational metrics and create reports and other documentation
  • Contribute to overall organizational efficiency by proactively addressing needs as they evolve

Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with office equipment (e.g. photocopiers machines and printers)
  • High school diploma, some post-secondary education is preferred
  • Class 5 driver’s license and ready access to reliable transportation

Eligibility:

This position is funded in part by Nature Canada Work To Grow. As such, applicants must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

  • i. Be between the ages of fifteen (15) and thirty (30) (inclusive);
  • ii. Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
  • iii. Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • iv. Be legally entitled to work according to the applicable provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
