General Description

The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee (JCSC) is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and self-motivated individual to join our team as an Ecological Restoration & Stewardship Intern. This position supports the restoration, protection, and long-term health of the Junction Creek watershed through hands-on ecological restoration, environmental monitoring, community stewardship, and public engagement initiatives across Greater Sudbury/ N'Swakamok.

Working alongside JCSC staff, volunteers, and community partners, the intern will coordinate and deliver habitat restoration projects, environmental monitoring and research, and community stewardship activities. They will also assist with project planning, data management, reporting, and communications while gaining valuable experience in ecological restoration, watershed management, conservation science, and nonprofit environmental program delivery.

Responsibilities

The Ecological Restoration & Stewardship Intern will work under the supervision of the Executive Director and Program Manager while collaborating with staff, volunteers, community partners, Indigenous communities, municipalities, and other stakeholders to implement ecological restoration and stewardship initiatives throughout the Junction Creek watershed.

This position offers hands-on experience in habitat restoration, environmental monitoring, community engagement, project coordination, conservation research, and nonprofit operations while providing opportunities to develop technical field skills and contribute to meaningful environmental conservation initiatives.

The intern's primary focus will be coordinating and implementing ecological restoration and stewardship projects while supporting environmental monitoring, scientific reporting, community engagement, and public education.

Specific duties will include

• Coordinate and conduct ecological restoration and stewardship activities, including riparian revitalization, planting native species, shoreline stabilization, invasive species management, stormwater filter maintenance, and community clean-ups.
• Organize equipment, manage supplies, and assist with volunteer coordination during restoration projects.
• Collaborate with community partners, stakeholders, youth groups, and the general public to promote environmental stewardship.
• Assist with stream monitoring and research, including water quality testing, biomonitoring, and wildlife surveys.
• Record detailed field notes, photographs, and observations to track project progress.
• Enter, manage, and maintain environmental and research data.
• Prepare reports summarizing project outcomes and findings for internal and external audiences.
• Share scientific information, environmental conservation messaging, program updates, and reports with stakeholders, community partners, and the public.
• Participate in outreach programs, educational workshops, and community events to raise awareness about watershed stewardship and habitat conservation.

Asset Skills and Experience

• Post-secondary education or equivalent experience in Environmental Restoration/Monitoring, Fish and Wildlife Technician, Biology or other related field of study.
• Experience conducting environmental restoration activities.
• Enjoy working outdoors, rain or shine.
• Physically fit and able to endure hiking outside in rough terrains, variable weather conditions, and with exposure to biting and stinging insects.
• Detail-oriented and able to accurately enter and manage data.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Microsoft Teams.
• Organized and resourceful with a demonstrated ability to time-manage and appropriately prioritize projects.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently with little to no supervision at times.
• Personable, with good interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and able to work within a team environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Bilingual, with oral and written fluency in French an asset but not necessary.
• Able to work occasional weekends and weekday evenings.
• Valid Class G Driver’s Licence with clean driving record an asset.
• Able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check.
• First Aid and CPR training an asset. Able to provide community programs following health and safety protocols.
