Job Title: Restoration Assistant

The Restoration Assistant supports the Conservation Technician in the day to day maintenance of trails and restoration projects. They will develop ecosystem restoration and maintenance skills while supporting the continued regeneration of valuable habitat.

Every year over 5000 individuals and families build better connections with the land through the Ignatius Jesuit Centre’s (IJC)’s retreats, trainings, farm enterprises, trails, and land-based initiatives. IJC’s mission is to cultivate spiritual growth and ecological engagement. IJC’s 640-acre property has three main programs which include Loyola House, a world-class retreat centre, Ignatius Farm, a community organic training farm offering local access to land and food, and the Old-Growth Forest, a 94-acre conservation and education initiative.

KEY ACTIVITIES

  • Maintain trails & boardwalks; pruning, mowing, and weed trimming
  • Site preparation, invasive species management, native woody and herbaceous plantings
  • Tree and garden care; mulching, watering and removing rodent guards
  • Work with volunteers to complete restoration activities
  • Maintain cleanliness of natural areas
  • Assist with documentation and monitoring
  • Landscape maintenance including lawn and gardens
  • Winter Maintenance work including plowing, salting, and shoveling
  • Collaborate with other departments as needed
  • Occasional evening or weekend work, with weekend on-call work during winter maintenance season

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Ecological Restoration, Forestry, Conservation Biology, Land Resource Management, Environmental Sciences or an equivalent combination of relevant education, work and life experience

Licenses or Certificates: Valid ‘G’ class driver’s license, Chainsaw Operator Certificate an asset, WHMIS, First Aid

Mandatory KSAs (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities)

  • Willing and able to do physically demanding work in varied weather conditions, including regularly lifting up to 20kgs repeatedly
  • Knowledge and understanding of working with groups
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends as needed
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience operating power tools and machinery (including mowers and tractors) an asset
  • Experience working with volunteers or in a community-oriented setting an asset

FUNDING ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must have Canadian citizenship, Canadian permanent residency status, or Canadian refugee status
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old

Job Title: Seasonal Land Worker (multiple positions)

                  Specializations in grounds keeping, restoration, and or agricultural work

Job Type: Contract Varying Lengths  

16-week positions: May 4, 2026 End Date: August 21, 2026 (with possible extension)

8-week positions: Various Start Dates May 4 2026 or later (with possible extension)

Deadline: April 19,2026 – Round 1; April 30,2026 - Round 2

Wage: $18.10/hour

Perks: 30- minute paid lunch, $35/month phone subsidy, organic vegetables as available, garden plot if desired

The Ignatius lands include deciduous and mixed forest, meadows, urban fringe, naturalized and  ornamental landscapes, Class 3 provincially significant wetlands and a restored cold water stream.  Ignatius Farm programs include community gardens, community orchard, Small Plot Agriculture rentals,  New Farmer Training, volunteering and community events We are fully committed to the ecological care  of this land. 

Seasonal Land staff work directly with our Farm/Land staff and volunteers in a team-oriented  environment to care for the land at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre.

 KEY ACTIVITIES

• Maintain lawns, general landscaping and gardens

• Maintain trails and trail features

• Support restoration activities including invasive species removal, tree planting & care of plantings • Support farm work in community gardens, orchard, fields and greenhouses

• Guide and work with volunteers in a variety of grounds keeping, restoration & agricultural tasks • Work safely with equipment e.g. riding lawn mowers, weed trimmers, tractors and hand tools  • Work outdoors in varied weather conditions 

EXPERIENCE

• Grounds keeping, community farms, forestry, organic horticulture and/or ecological restoration • Motorized equipment (mowers, string trimmers, pickup trucks, etc.) experience an asset • Willing and able to do physically demanding work, safely, in varied weather conditions, including  regularly lifting up to 20kgs repeatedly

• Interest and aptitude in learning new skills
