The Nova Scotia Working Woodlands Trust (NSWWT) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to upholding the stewardship legacies of private woodland owners in Nova Scotia.

With over 65% of the province's land privately owned, our mission focuses on partnering with landowners to preserve forests against threats such as clearcutting, development, and subdivision.  We work to protect the ecological, economic, and cultural values of forests while promoting ecological forestry practices that balance conservation and working landscapes. Our efforts are rooted in empowering landowners and communities to be stewards of their land, ensuring that Nova Scotia's forests remain a vital part of its natural heritage for generations to come. 

Job Description: 
Duration: 16 weeks   
Hours: 37.5 hours/week  
Pay: $23.00/hr 
Location: Hybrid – remote work required throughout Nova Scotia. Must be willing to commute to Caledonia, NS on a weekly basis.  

The Land Trust Intern will play a vital role in advancing our mission to preserve privately owned forests in Nova Scotia. This hybrid role combines field-based stewardship activities with office based outreach and communications support. You will work closely with our Stewardship Team and Outreach Coordinator to help promote stewardship of working forests and engage communities in ecological forestry and conservation efforts. Key tasks and responsibilities include: 

Field-Based Responsibilities: 
• Assist the Stewardship Team in planning and conducting field visits, including site assessments, surveys, and monitoring activities.  
• Contribute to the creation of baseline documentation reports for participating landowners, detailing property characteristics, biodiversity, and conservation values.  
• Support the implementation and enforcement of working forest community easements through monitoring visits and documentation.  
• Participate in mapping, data collection, and record-keeping that informs the development of a baseline documentation report (BDR), and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified management plan.  

Outreach Responsibilities:  
• Assist in developing online content, educational materials, and resources for NSWWT’s digital platforms, including social media posts, newsletters, and blog articles.  
• Collaborate with NSWWT staff and partner organizations to design and deliver workshops, events, and community engagement initiatives focused on forest conservation.  
• Contribute to the design and distribution of promotional materials, such as information sheets, posters, and event invitations.  
• Engage with local communities and stakeholders to raise awareness about NSWWT’s programs and mission through outreach campaigns.  
• Provide logistical support for the planning and hosting of community events, such as property boundary workshops and landowner Q&A sessions.  
• Maintain landowner relationships, assist with logistics and planning of easement onboarding.  
• Conduct routine website updates, including SEO, site structure, and analytics monitoring.  

Additional Responsibilities:  
• Maintain accurate records of project progress and activities to ensure compliance with organizational and funding requirements.  
• Foster strong relationships with landowners, community members, and partner organizations to support conservation initiatives.  
• Actively participate in team meetings, training sessions, and collaborative planning efforts to enhance program delivery.  

Educational & Experience Requirements: 
• Completion of a minimum of 2 years of a post-secondary program related to environmental studies, forestry, natural resource management or similar 
• Experience using ArcGIS Pro, Survey 123 and/or Field Maps 
• Ability to work outside in all weather conditions  
• Strong interpersonal skills and exercises sound judgement in decision making 
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask 
• Self-starting, strong work ethic and initiative 
• Passion for ecological forest conservation and stewardship 
• Familiarity with forest inventory practices and forest conservation is an asset 
• Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
