Position: Director of Operations and Cooperative Development
Organization: Halifax Brewery Farmers' Market Cooperative LTD
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Halifax Brewery Market seeks to provide locally grown and harvested food in a festive atmosphere in the historic Alexander Keith Building in downtown Halifax.
The candidate will bring enthusiasm and dedication to the development of the Halifax Brewery Market’s cooperative. They will provide administrative support to the Board and coordinate the cooperative’s programming. The candidate will work with the cooperative board & members, staff, and stakeholders to maintain and expand market’s activities, providing alternative revenue streams to ensure the cooperative’s continued operations. The candidate should be passionate about food, local farming and agriculture, and be knowledgeable about the Nova Scotia food & agriculture community.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Marketing & Promotions, Internal and External Communications
- Initiate media stories on the market; respond positively to media inquiries.
- Monthly Vendor Newsletter
- Weekday Social Media, Emails, Telephone calls
- Website Management
- Maintain overall design parameters (table toppers, handbooks, handbills)
- Coordinate and execute the annual Hello, Spring! Event during the first Saturday in April.
- Leadership & Coordination
- Initiate & maintain collaborations with outside agencies
- Conferences and speaking engagements
- Secure all necessary permits for operations (CRA, NSJRS, FMNS, Public Health)

- Programming (Taking Root and Nourishing Communities)
- Human Resources & Staffing
- Building positive relationships
- Developing and monitoring goals for staff, including training opportunities
- Review practices with an anti-oppression, anti-colonial and anti-racism lens

- Maintaining onsite and online files
- IT (maintain computers, printers, google suite, WIX website and sales platform)
- Bookkeeping
- Monthly reconciliations & financial reporting
- Prepare and present yearly budgets for board input and approval. Monitor actual spending & regularly report to the board on progress and variances.
- Prepare year-end financial statements.
- Ensure all payroll and HST filing are accurate and filed on time.
- Site Management
- Maintain the physical site, liaise with the landlord and building management to ensure smooth operations onsite
- Track, coordinate and budget for any building maintenance needs.
- Create a cleaning schedule and coordinate with staff to ensure completion (in 2026, this role is also in charge on the Pu’Taliewey and Info Booth rooms for weekly cleaning)
- Cooperative Administration & Development
- Active vendor recruitment to the Cooperative membership
- Add value to cooperative memberships
- Support long-term and strategic planning initiatives of the Cooperative Board
- Ensure the cooperative values are layered into all work and programming
- Support the administration of the board (meeting schedule, AGMs)
POSITION DETAILS
This is a paid, part-time flexible position requiring a commitment of approximately 130 hours monthly. Work hours and location are flexible outside of market hours and the weekly staff meeting. Occasional availability on Market Days (Saturdays) is required.
Benefits include:
- $4000/month
- four-weeks paid vacation and a paid holiday closure between Christmas and New Years
