About Flourish! School Food Society

Flourish is a registered non-profit charity that works to bring nourishing change to the way students eat and learn about food in schools. We help build nourishing school meal programs for all students that are supported by curriculum connected, experiential learning opportunities in school gardens, kitchens and composts.

We imagine a region in which all students can access nourishing food and learn through immersion in all aspects of food (growing, harvesting, preparing, sharing, composting).

Our Mission is to support: efficient, nourishing school food services; hands-on food literacy programming, and; development of nourishing food environments in schools.

Flourish provides three key services to schools:

  1. Fun, nourishing meals. Following mother nature’s guidance we create diverse, seasonal and youth friendly menus and prepare and distribute hundreds of home cooked meals and snacks daily.
  2. Food aggregation and distribution. Through partnership we help connect school communities with the foods they need to ensure students are nourished and ready to learn. We provide breakfast staples, snacks and other thoughtfully sourced grocery items.
  3. Food literacy. We support school gardens and promote good practice in school food services. We believe there is magic in experientially connecting with seeds, gardens, kitchens, and composts.

Values:

  • Diversity. The Earth is in balance when a wide diversity of life is able to flourish in dynamic relationships of mutualism and interdependence. The same is true for human cultures and relationships. We value diversity in all its forms and seek to create safe space for diversity to flourish.
  • Inclusion. Everyone is welcome at the table. Structural inequities can limit the ability of some to participate, so we work actively to remove barriers to ensure everyone is welcome.
  • Honesty/Integrity. Human relationships are rooted in trust. Our approach to build trust is to maintain honest, reflexive communication with ourselves and clear, transparent communication with others.
  • Learning/Curiosity. We seek to approach the world with a sense of awe and wonder. Every moment is an opportunity to be curious and to learn.
  • Humility. We are guests in this place with much to learn.
  • Generosity/Kindness. Love is the force that inspires and animates the world. We seek to bring this forward in all situations.

Our Goals are To Help:

  • Make School More Nourishing. School can be a difficult place. Food can make it softer, richer, more nourishing and more accessible.
  • Educate. This is the professed goal of schools. We believe an educated citizen must know how to grow and share food in nourishing ways. We help educate teachers, parents and students in connected, hands-on ways.
  • Empower. We want to support youth to see opportunities in food. Opportunities to develop a stronger, better future for us all.
