Cortes Climate Action Network is looking for a Climate Community Engagement & Education Coordinator: someone to bring people together to learn the basics of the climate emergency and the strategies for facing it, and to grow a community that wants to keep showing up.

This isn't a job for a climate expert. It's a job for a connector — someone people are drawn to, who can organize a good gathering, hold a warm and honest conversation, and learn alongside everyone else. If you can coordinate, write and read reasonably well, and you're curious enough to grow into the content, we want to hear from you.

You'd be building people's skills in organizing, strategy, communications, and facing climate reality — and helping turn worry into connection and action.

It's a 6-month pilot, about 12 hours a week, with room to grow if it takes off.

About the role

C-CAN is hiring a part-time coordinator to deliver community education and engagement programming on Cortes Island. This is a people-first role: your job is to bring neighbours together to learn the basics of the climate emergency and the strategies for winning — and to keep them coming back. You don't need to be a climate expert. You need to be someone others want to be around, who can organize a program, hold a room, and grow with the work.

This is grounded in CCAN's existing direction and in the community research led by Ilse Martínez Candelas (UVic Sustainability Scholars), which set out to understand Cortesians' beliefs, knowledge, and preferences and to identify the collective actions the community will actually support. We are also taking action on Quest Canada's work in our community last year assessing community needs, where they identified that getting together is key to unlocking progress.

What you'll do

• Plan and run regular educational events and gatherings (talks, workshops, screenings, potluck-style learning, peer circles, book clubs).
• • resources exist already that we'll be leveraging - eg. climatefresk.org, myclimateplan.com/, trainings.350.org/, Western university climate action course)
• Help participants learn the fundamentals: local resilience - food/water/shelter/fire prevention, the reality of the climate emergency, theories of change/organizing, and the local strategies in front of us.
• Build people's capacity in five core areas: resilience & coordination, community organizing, strategy, communications, and climate literacy.
• Move people along a "ladder of engagement" — from curiosity, to connection, to active participation.
• Develop simple written materials (event notices, short explainers, follow-ups) and read/synthesize existing CCAN and community documents.
• Connect people to each other and to existing efforts; reduce isolation and eco-anxiety by making participation social and welcoming.
• Plan projects and raise funds, apply for grants
• Track participation and report on what's working to inform whether the program expands.

Who we're looking for

• A connecting, warm personality — a natural convener.
• Solid coordination and follow-through (scheduling, logistics, keeping commitments).
• Able to write and read clearly enough to produce simple materials and digest source documents.
• Genuine keenness for learning — comfortable not being the expert and growing into the content.
• Comfortable working independently with light oversight.
• Comfortable co-creating programming/strategy with a team of volunteers
• Climate expertise is not required.
• Lived connection to Cortes and its community is an asset, but not essential.

Terms

• 6-month pilot contract, approximately 12 hours/week (flexible scheduling).
• See below for wage grid, $27-36/hour.
• Contract position with room to expand or become permanent depending on uptake and program success.
• Reports to Max Thaysen, co-leader of CCAN.

Step 1 · Learner · $27/hr
New to coordination/organizing. Can convene a gathering and follow through on logistics, but needs guidance on program design and content. Growing into the five capacity areas. Sits at the local living wage so no one is paid below it.

Step 2 · Capable · $30/hr
Some events/community-organizing experience. Runs a regular cadence independently, writes clear materials, moves people along the engagement ladder with light oversight. Comfortable not being the climate expert.

Step 3 · Experienced · $33/hr
Proven organizer. Designs programming, brings grant-writing/fundraising capability, needs minimal oversight. Can mentor volunteers and synthesize CCAN/community documents into strategy. Comfortable discussing climate issues.

Step 4 · Lead · $36/hr
All of the above and: Runs the program end-to-end with autonomy. Secures funding, deep local roots, strong track record convening and growing community, strong climate literacy.
