JOB OPPORTUNITY

Position: Assistant Project Coordinator
Organization: Scales Nature Park

Location: based near Orillia, study area roughly Muskoka and Lake Simcoe watershed, travel to other project sites may be required
Housing: Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site or at a field site (see below)

Duration: 4-12 months with possibility of extension
Salary: $18-$25/ hour depending on experience and responsibilities

Duties will vary with the nature of each position, but will include:

  • Fulfill all functions of a senior conservation technician including surveys, data entry, hotline monitoring, team management, etc.
  • Ensure all permit conditions, including species count, geographic boundaries, etc. are met
  • Assist in goal planning for summer field season including location selection, equipment planning, team composition and data collection methods
  • Update training resources for community training and reptile boot camp to reflect current best practices
  • Assist with staff and volunteer supervision and management to ensure a cohesive team dynamic, assess issues as they arise and resolve conflicts
  • Assist with resource management, including staff, equipment, vehicles, etc.
  • Maintain project equipment, including inventory and ordering replacements as needed
  • Update technology including phones, tablets, laptops and software as required
  • Liaise with landowners and community members about private land access, project goals
  • Assist with writing grant proposals, payment claims, and reports to funders, project partners, landowners, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Field Projects Coordinator in compiling and cleaning data (inclusive of fixing problems)
  • Manipulation and analyses of data and the creation of maps, models, or tools related to wildlife conservation using geographic information systems (GIS) applications
  • Assist in writing year end reports and permits to government agencies
  • Collaborate with the Education Coordinator to facilitate delivery of educational programming within target areas (ie. Georgian Bay, Muskoka)

Requirements:

  • Ability to follow detailed protocols, stay highly organized, task switch and prioritize conflicting goals
  • Proven time management and leadership skills
  • Experience with managing staff and volunteers
  • GIS experience and skills an asset
  • Experience with large datasets- collation, compilation and cleaning
  • Experience with resource management an asset
  • Valid class G or G2 driver’s license and good driving record
  • Oral communication and people skills
  • Flexibility regarding scheduling
  • Ability to work and thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations with a positive attitude
  • Internal motivation and the ability to work without supervision
  • Positive attitude and passion for reptiles and their conservation
  • High degree of indestructibility and perseverance despite a variety of environmental conditions (cold, heat, sun, biting insects, tired volunteers, etc.)
  • Strong swimming skills (position requires wading, swimming, and paddling in cold water) is required
  • Previous canoe/paddle experience an asset

Accommodations (shared) may be available on-site or at a field site (quad or double bunk room). Candidates should enjoy working both indoors and outdoors, in a variety of settings. The ability to thrive as part of a close-knit team in challenging situations and a live/work environment is important.
