Remuneration: $53,000 to $65,000 commensurate with experience plus competitive benefit package

West Coast Environmental Law has an immediate opening for a full-time Climate Accountability Strategist position based in our Vancouver office.

As part of the Climate Program team the Climate Accountability Strategist will engage in community organizing, including facilitating volunteers, to help the public to draw links between their experiences of climate change, climate science and the need for fossil fuel companies to pay for a share of climate costs. This will include pressing governments to take legal action against fossil fuel companies to recover costs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

• Significant experience organizing/campaigning and supporting grassroots movements” within the climate and/or environmental space
• Is a skilled oral and written communicator with particular ability to translate information on complex and challenging issues into accessible, compelling stories for a variety of audiences
• Demonstrated acumen with government relations and advocacy on climate and/or environmental issues
• Experience and commitment to help deepen WCEL’s engagement with groups and individuals from all walks of life, inspiring understanding and action for systemic environmental solutions
• Broad knowledge and understanding of climate change and a demonstrated commitment to addressing its impacts through a climate justice lens
• Commitment to applying equity and justice principles and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
• Strong time and project management skills, with demonstrated ability to meet multiple and concurrent deadlines
• Is comfortable using digital tools for internal/team communications and project management (e.g. Slack, Outlook calendars, Zoom, etc.)

Beneficial Experience/Skills:

• Knowledge of emergency management, climate adaptation and planning, climate attribution or impact projection science, economics or climate cost accounting.
• Experience with delivering training, workshops, focused on building individual and community capacity
• Experience collaborating with Indigenous communities, governments and organizations
• Fluency in Mandarin, Cantonese and/or Punjabi
• Experience organizing in diverse economic or cultural communities
• Familiarity with BC local governments

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Research and write materials and design tactics intended to communicate the national, provincial, local and/or costed risks of climate change.
• Organize, design and host events to discuss climate risks and costs and approaches to building climate safety and resilience, including organizing and hosting public events on West Coast’s research.
• Work with the West Coast climate and communications teams and allies to develop and implement engagement strategies aimed at mobilizing public support for governments to track climate costs, implement climate adaptation measures and hold fossil fuel companies accountable for climate costs.
• Coordinate with the Climate Program lead on organizational public speaking and communications, including, if requested, acting as a spokesperson for the program on campaign, research or other non-legal matters.
• Coordinate volunteers, clients, allies and partners to work together on program goals, including providing them with support and resources as required. Coordinate with West Coast staff and program partners on public events and/or communications.
• Expand the Climate Program’s volunteer base, including recruitment of, and training and support for, volunteers.
• Work with Climate Communications Specialist to coordinate quarterly e-newsletter and periodic action alerts related to West Coast’s Climate Program;
• Assist with fundraising and public education events organized by and with volunteers, clients, allies and partners.
• Develop and maintain relationships with government officials, community groups and clients interested in pursuing legal action against fossil fuel companies.
• Provide research assistance on mutually agreed topics related to the Climate Program, including writing reports, memos, or other materials based on that research.
• Drafting and production of Climate Program communication materials and publications.
• Other organisational and programmatic event logistics (e.g., dialogue forums, press conferences, webinars) as requested, including documenting program events.
• Administrative and organizational tasks necessary to support the above, including but not limited to fundraising applications, reporting to the Board and funders, participation in staff meetings, etc.
• Other related tasks assigned by the Climate Program Lead.

Remuneration: Salary range is based on an annual full-time salary of $53,000 to $65,000 commensurate with experience. We offer 3 weeks annual leave to start plus 2 weeks paid time off during our winter office closure, and a competitive benefits package including extended health plan (after 3 months of employment) and RRSP contribution (after one year of employment).
