Job Summary:

In alignment with YCCBC values, the Community Climate Action Mobilizer is a unique hybrid role that combines community-based program development with hands-on environmental stewardship work across Southern Vancouver Island. This position is designed for a curious, self-directed, and relationship-oriented youth who is excited to explore how future youth climate programming could take shape in the Victoria region while also contributing directly to conservation and land stewardship initiatives with the BC Parks Foundation.

The role is split between two streams of work:

  • Community Climate Action Mobilizer supporting BC Parks Foundation (2–3 days/week) supporting biodiversity, conservation, and public engagement work across Southern Vancouver Island.
  • Program Scouting & Community Engagement (2–3 days/week) focused on exploring opportunities for future Youth Climate Corps BC programming in the Victoria region.*

This position emphasizes relationship-building, communication, initiative, research, project management, and self-directed learning.

Key Responsibilities

Community Climate Action Mobilizer (2–3 Days/Week)

Working alongside to support the BC Parks Foundation land conservation team, responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting ecosystem stewardship and land conservation activities across Southern Vancouver Island.
  • Conducting biodiversity surveys and ecological data collection.
  • Assisting with invasive plant removal and habitat restoration efforts.
  • Supporting public outreach and engagement activities.
  • Assisting with remote camera monitoring and environmental sensing projects.
  • Supporting environmental data analysis and report writing.
  • Supporting research and planning initiatives that inform stewardship, restoration, and conservation management priorities.
  • Helping increase organizational capacity for stewardship and conservation initiatives.
  • Travelling to different project sites and conservation properties as assigned weekly.
  • Working collaboratively with field crews and project staff in outdoor environments.

Program Scout & Community Engagement (2–3 Days/Week)

  • Explore opportunities and future possibilities for Youth Climate Corps BC programming in the Victoria region.
  • Conduct community mapping to better understand:
  • Build relationships with a wide range of community members, organizations, employers, funders, and potential partners across sectors.
  • Meet with prospective collaborators and conduct informational interviews to better understand regional opportunities and needs.
  • Research funding opportunities, partnership models, and potential future program structures.
  • Gather insights on local job opportunities and pathways for youth employment and training.
  • Represent YCCBC in conversations with community members and organizations by sharing information about the organization’s mission and approach.
  • Identify ways YCCBC can support or contribute to existing community initiatives.
  • Help develop and test ideas for future youth-focused climate programming and projects.
  • Document findings, reflections, and recommendations related to future program development opportunities.
  • Report back on promising program models, partnerships, and areas for future engagement.
  • Contribute to organizational learning by reflecting on the process of exploring and developing programming in a new region.

Qualifications:

No ‘formal’ post-secondary education is required, as we recognize that ‘formal’ education at colleges and universities is just one version of many types of meaningful education.

  • Must be between 17 and 30 years old at the start of the position.
  • Reside in or near Victoria (relocation assistance is not provided).
  • Personal values and commitment to climate action, social justice, anti-racism, anti-oppression, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation and decolonization.
  • Flexibility to work varying hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate project schedules.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.
  • Criminal record check will be required.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks involving extended periods of standing, walking, moving supplies or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds, and activities requiring bending or stooping.

Experience, skills, and attributes:

  • Reflective awareness of how personal lived experiences with systemic barriers or privileges shape unique contributions to social change.
  • Curiosity to explore many kinds of work that support community climate action.
  • Interest in community development, youth engagement, climate action, and environmental stewardship.
  • Experience engaging with diverse community members in diverse settings.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Adaptable and adventurous mindset, comfortable navigating ambiguity and change.
  • Proficiency in using G-Suite (Google Apps), Microsoft Office, basic databases, video conferencing tools, social media platforms, and other relevant applications.
  • Knowledge of or work experience in areas such as climate change, anti-oppression work, food security, energy, forestry, and climate justice is an asset.
  • Experience with outreach, communications, media, research, or environmental stewardship is considered an asset.
  • Standard First Aid certification or higher is an asset, training may be provided.
  • Driver’s license and access to a vehicle is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor stewardship work may take place in a variety of weather conditions and natural environments, including uneven terrain, forests, grasslands, and coastal areas.
  • Work locations and assignments will vary week to week depending on project needs and seasonal priorities.
  • Physical tasks may include walking on trails, lifting and carrying equipment or tools, invasive plant removal, and extended periods of standing or working outdoors.
  • Work from a home office, attending meetings at various locations throughout the community.

*Please note: this exploratory work does not guarantee that a future program will be launched in the region.
