Position: Senior Strategic Communications Advisor

The Greenbelt Foundation is looking for a full-time Senior Strategic Communications Advisor.

About the Role

The Greenbelt Foundation’s Strategic Communications department exists to increase awareness and appreciation of the Greenbelt, while meaningfully and effectively engaging diverse stakeholders in the work of the Greenbelt Foundation.

The Senior Strategic Communications Advisor will have primary responsibility for developing key content pieces that reflect the Foundation’s strategic priorities and core programs. With the support of senior leadership and advisors, this role will execute the Greenbelt Foundation’s media relation and stakeholder engagement strategies and activities, including implementation of the Foundation’s municipal relations initiatives. Through these various responsibilities, the Senior Strategic Communications Advisor plays a pivotal role in amplifying the work and impact of the Foundation with key stakeholders.

You are a strong and proven writer and content-developer with a sophisticated understanding of contemporary approaches to communication planning and delivery. A self-starter, you are motivated to support our unique, public-interest mandate, working collaboratively with colleagues across the organization. You have a strong interest in the Greenbelt (or related areas) and are passionate about leveraging communications tools as a means of engaging diverse stakeholders to enhance understanding and engagement around the Greenbelt and its unique and irreplaceable benefits to Ontario.

What You Will Do

Specific roles and responsibilities include:

Content Development and Management

  • Lead content development including key messaging documents, presentation notes, video scripts, web content, blog posts, etc.
  • Develop and oversee content management plans and systems to maximize the opportunities to leverage assets across various channels and over time
  • Support the organization and its various departments in understanding content types and their appropriate use

Media Relations

  • Oversee development and implementation of annual media relations strategy, including report launches, program milestones, emerging issues, etc.
  • Track and report on emerging media trends and key issues
  • Draft and distribute press releases and media pitches
  • Oversee development of op-eds
  • Cultivate relationships with media stakeholders
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of media lists, media tracking, and article archiving
  • Oversee reporting on media engagement to other departments as necessary
  • Support Foundation staff with media interview prep and messaging

Stakeholder Relations

  • Supports development of annual stakeholder relations strategy, including work supporting municipalities in the Greenbelt
  • Support implementation of annual stakeholder relations activities, including drafting briefing notes

Conferences and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Oversee Foundation participation in conferences (presentations and tabling) and other events with key stakeholders
  • Oversee development of tabling materials highlighting Foundation activities and impact
  • Support production and distribution of promotional materials
  • Represent the Foundation at grantee events, community events, and conferences when appropriate
  • Support the development of an Indigenous engagement strategy for the Foundation

Reporting and Evaluation

  • Coordinate drafting of quarterly board reports, twice-annual funder reports, and annual impact report.

Administration

  • Support budget management and tracking
  • Liaise with vendors and other partners
  • Other activities upon request

Leadership Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities at this time, though it does require working closely with, and helping to guide, junior staff within the Strategic Communications department. This role provides project and thought leadership by guiding communications initiatives and advising staff and other leaders on media relations and messaging. This role communicates communication activities across departments, collaborates with colleagues on shared projects, and supports others in preparing for media interactions or public communications.

Knowledge and Experience

The required knowledge, experience, and skills for this position include:

  • Degree or diploma in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism and/or related education
  • 5+ years of experience in communications
  • Experience working with media and preparing public communication materials such as press releases, briefings, and reports
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and research skills for diverse audiences and formats
  • Knowledge of communication principles, practices, and techniques
  • Ability to analyze and summarize complex information clearly and accurately
  • Strong interpersonal, oral communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, make sound decisions, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong project coordination and organizational skills with attention to deadlines and detail
  • Strong computer proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office, social media platforms, email marketing applications, web development platforms and content management systems (such as WordPress), and design/video software (such as, Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, etc.) would be considered an asset
  • General understanding of Canadian media and political landscape
  • Interest in and passion for the Greenbelt; appreciation for the benefits it affords all Ontarians

What We Offer

Hybrid work model: Our organization is currently operating on a hybrid work model with virtual and in-office work (office located at Bathurst Street and College Street in Toronto), based on demands of specific work tasks and/or departmental meetings.

Salary: $70,000-$80,000/year, commensurate with experience, plus a competitive benefits package. We are open to considering candidates with more experience than detailed above, and compensation would be adjusted accordingly.
