Position: Communications Manager
Organization: Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Northern Alberta
Location: Qualified candidates living in Alberta should apply. Preference will be given to candidates who live in Edmonton or are willing to relocate to Edmonton. Our team works in our office in downtown Edmonton two days per week.

CPAWS Northern Alberta is seeking an enthusiastic, environmentally focused person to act as the Chapter’s Communications Manager.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager leads the organization’s external communications in support of building awareness of conservation issues and opportunities in Northern Alberta.

Planning and Strategy

  • Implement communications strategies in alignment with the chapter’s strategic plan.
  • Act as an expert communications advisor to the CPAWS Northern Alberta Leadership team.
  • Track and monitor KPIs across communications channels for grant requirements and growth opportunities for the chapter.
  • Lead cross-channel initiatives that promote awareness, understanding, and action for conservation issues in Alberta.

Social Media

  • Ensure that the organization retains a strategic social media presence; Maintain and grow current channels and identify opportunities in emerging platforms.
  • Manage all social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Blusky, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok)
  • Develop and implement a social media strategy that drives awareness and engagement.
  • Responsible for developing posts in alignment with the chapter’s strategic focus and overseeing posts developed by staff and collaborators.

Media

  • Grow and maintain the chapter’s media contact list; develop relationships with the media (locally, nationally, and internationally) via communication of our press releases and chapter news, and assistance in scheduling interviews with CPAWS spokespeople
  • As required, serve as one of CPAWS Northern Alberta’s spokespeople addressing media, supporters, external stakeholders, and the public.
  • Identify opportunities for press releases, advisories and op-eds; collaborate with staff to draft, edit and publish products for distribution.
  • Monitor media mentions of CPAWS Northern Alberta and arising conservation news pertaining to CPAWS’ work.
  • Track all media mentions of CPAWS Northern Alberta staff.

Email Communications

  • Steward the creation of the monthly CPAWS Northern Alberta newsletter.
  • Identify opportunities for subscriber segmentation.
  • Lead the implementation of fundraising and advocacy emails; track results in eCRM (Engaging Networks)
  • Adhere to protection and privacy laws to manage subscriber and donor list

Website

  • Oversee ongoing management and updating of CPAWS Northern Alberta website and microsites (WordPress and Squarespace)
  • Identify opportunities for content development on CPAWS Northern Alberta website
  • Continuously improve website utility and visibility using Google Analytics, Search Console, and other SEO tools.
  • Manage domain registration

Development

  • Work with Executive Director and chapter leadership team on fundraising and partnership initiatives
  • Implement strategies promoting CPAWS Northern Alberta membership and upcoming events
  • Responsible for in-person and virtual event logistics: securing speakers, promotion, administrative support.
  • Responsible for marketing and promotion budget: stickers, merchandise, print materials
  • Work with leadership team to identify partnership opportunities

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in communications or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and executing cross-channel communication campaigns.
  • Familiarity with the non-profit sector, experience or familiarity in the conservation sector an asset.
  • Knowledge of issue and political advertising regulations.
  • Experience in a field with complex political, technical and public considerations for communications.
  • Demonstrated success leading impactful communications initiatives and an ability to translate results to stakeholders.
  • Must be team-oriented while comfortable with, and capable of, working independently.
  • Must be capable of responding quickly and flexibly to changing events.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including an ability and passion for developing and fostering enduring relationships with communities, governments, and the non-profit sector.
  • Positive, results-oriented, problem-solving attitude.
  • Technologically savvy and proficient with social media platforms, Microsoft 365 (Office, Teams, Outlook), Zoom, design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva), and website management in WordPress.
  • Experience in formatting technical and public-facing reports using Adobe InDesign
  • Familiarity with Meta Business Suite and executing Paid campaigns through the platform.
  • Able to quickly learn and apply new digital tools and platforms (e.g., Engaging Networks, web and social media analytics tools) to support and enhance digital communications and outreach.
  • Availability to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends, as required.

Additional Information:

This position is a permanent full-time position, preferably with the applicant located in the Edmonton region.

CPAWS Northern Alberta operates under a four-day work week at 32 hours/week. The position includes 3 weeks of vacation, personal/sick days and an office closure during the winter holiday. Salary range for the role is $65,000-70,000, depending upon experience.
