Position: Communications Coordinator
Organization: Alberta Environmental Network
Location: Anywhere in Alberta, this is a remote position

Employment Type: 25-35 hours per week
Compensation: $58,000 annual salary, based on a 35-hour work week

About AEN

The Alberta Environmental Network (AEN) is a non-profit, non-partisan, politically-active membership organization dedicated to collaboratively preserving and protecting Alberta's environment. AEN works with various environmental, health & and community groups, as well as other allies, partners and a vibrant corps of volunteers to advance environmental sustainability, literacy, and advocacy.

AEN is a leading grassroots organizer in Alberta. We believe in connecting with Albertans through compassionate conversations and compelling communication. You may know AEN from “Alberta Talks”, a groundbreaking deep canvassing initiative, and as the co-leader of both the “Defend Alberta Parks” and “Alberta Beyond Coal – Protect our Water” campaigns.

Position Overview

The Communications Coordinator plays a key role in helping Albertans connect with environmental issues, campaigns, and opportunities for action.

Working closely with the Campaign and Network Directors and AEN team, the Coordinator supports and implements communications strategies across AEN’s programs, campaigns, events, and member engagement activities.

This role is ideal for an early-career communications professional who is passionate about environmental sustainability, community engagement, and storytelling. The successful candidate will be creative, organized, collaborative, and eager to learn. They will help create compelling content, strengthen relationships with members and partners, grow AEN’s online presence, and support communications that inspire meaningful public participation.

The Coordinator will have opportunities to build skills in strategic communications, digital engagement, campaign communications, media relations, and nonprofit advocacy while contributing to some of Alberta’s most important environmental conversations.

Working collaboratively with the AEN team, the Communications Coordinator will:

Campaign & Member Engagement

  • Support communications for AEN campaigns, working groups, events, and advocacy initiatives.
  • Help strengthen relationships with members, volunteers, donors, and partner organizations through effective communication.

Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Write, edit, and publish content for websites, newsletters, email campaigns, social media platforms, media releases, reports, and promotional materials.
  • Develop engaging stories that highlight AEN’s campaigns, members, volunteers, and impact.
  • Create graphics and visual content, including video content, using tools such as Canva.

Digital Communications

  • Manage and maintain AEN’s social media channels, including content creation, scheduling, monitoring, and audience engagement.
  • Support the development and maintenance of website content across AEN programs and campaigns.
  • Assist with email marketing campaigns and member communications.

Communications Planning & Evaluation

  • Assist in implementing communications plans and strategies.
  • Monitor communications performance and prepare reports on engagement, reach, and effectiveness.
  • Research audience needs, emerging trends, and best practices in communications and digital engagement.

Analytics & Continuous Improvement

  • Track and report on communications performance and audience engagement.
  • Use data and feedback to improve communications effectiveness.
  • Stay informed about communications trends, tools, and best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong and wide-ranging communications skills, experience, knowledge and training.
  • Experienced in content creation and social media management (Instagram, Facebook, x, Bluesky, etc.).
  • Proficiency with content management systems (including WordPress, Drupal) and email marketing tools.
  • Proficiency with design tools such as Canva.
  • Critical thinker and quick learner.
  • Creative, strategic and resourceful.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; highly organized, efficient and adaptable.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • A self-motivated team player able to work independently in a remote environment and collaboratively with diverse people and groups.
  • Interested in continual learning and professional development.
  • Enjoys being challenged.
  • A commitment to environmental sustainability and social justice.

Assets

  • Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, psychology or a related field.
  • At least two years of experience working or volunteering for a non-profit organization or community group.
  • At least two years of experience in campaign and advocacy.
  • Experience with analytics tools, graphic design, photography, or video creation.
  • Familiarity with Alberta's environmental, climate, or public policy landscape.
