Position: Communications Coordinator (Co-op Placement)
Organization: For Our Kids
Location: Home office, anywhere in Canada

To apply, you must be a current post-secondary student. This is a student co-op placement.

  • Term: 4 months with the possibility of renewal (ideal start date: September 15, 2025)
  • Hours: Approximately 20 hours/week. Some flexibility in scheduling.
  • Compensation: $30/hr

About For Our Kids

For Our Kids (FOK) is a grassroots network of parents, grandparents and guardians across Canada advocating for climate justice. We are from diverse backgrounds and experiences, united by our concern for our children’s future and determined to take action to reduce the impacts of climate change. Our goal is to build a powerful constituency for more urgent climate action, motivated by love for all kids and future generations.

We include social justice actions in our definition of climate action because climate breakdown does not impact everyone equally; our kids can't have a more just and resilient world without also addressing colonization, racism, gender inequity, ableism and poverty.

Overview of Role

We’re looking for a motivated person who understands and is passionate about grassroots organizing and the challenge of reaching and engaging with new audiences, especially busy parents and caregivers. You will be supporting the implementation of a communication strategy and will support campaigns and actions with creative communications using all our digital platforms.

This co-op position will be central to the implementation of our communications strategy, focusing on translating complex climate topics into accessible, actionable information for parents and families. You'll support the creation of compelling digital content and visuals, the management of our social media channels, and the website revamp to empower our parent organizers. This is a unique opportunity to build your skills in storytelling and digital communications while making a tangible impact on grassroots climate action and community resilience.

While we work collaboratively as a team, this role will work closely with our Communications Manager to support storytelling and content design and creation for our local teams, and other tasks to support the implementation of our communications strategy. You'll connect with the team via weekly calls and use Slack, Google Workspace, and Nationbuilder for internal communications.

Job Description and Duties

  • Content creation and storytelling for digital formats, including articles, blog posts, and social media
  • Support for the ongoing website revamp, focusing on content and user experience for parent organizers
  • Daily management of social media channels: Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky and Linkedin
  • Communication support for campaign actions, training events and community in-person meetings; this may include outreach strategy, event management support and the design of engagement materials
  • Communication support for our community teams; event amplification, storytelling and media management
  • Development of visual assets such as infographics and short videos to highlight community action, with the goal of telling the For Our Kids story and purpose to a broader audience, engaging more parents and families in the network
  • Monitoring and analysis of communication campaign performance using digital tools and reporting on impact
  • Collaboration with local parent teams to create and share practical resources for families

Summary of Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will have a good combination of the following:

  • A current post-secondary student in a program that relates to climate action, climate leadership or communications
  • An interest in strategic communication and a passion for engaging new audiences, especially parents and caregivers
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, LinkedIn) and a willingness to learn about digital communication strategy
  • Experience using online design tools like Canva
  • An eagerness to learn about media relations, including drafting press releases and working with journalists
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative and energetic approach
  • Creativity and a keen attention to detail
  • An awareness of climate justice issues and a belief that collective action can make a real impact
  • An understanding of or interest in the challenges facing parents and caregivers in the context of the climate crisis

While all qualified candidates are invited to apply, we particularly welcome applications from women, persons with disabilities, Black, Indigenous, or People of colour and LGBTQ2S+ candidates. We encourage candidates from equity-deserving groups to self-identify on their application.
