Title: Junior Coordinator, Research (Student Position)
Type: age 30 & under / summer

Description

The Bay Area Climate Change Council (BACCC), administratively housed within Mohawk College, is a collective impact initiative that catalyzes climate action in the Hamilton-Burlington “Bay Area”. BACCC aims for our communities to be net zero by 2050 and works to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the buildings, industry, and transportation sectors, which are the three main sources of emissions in the region. BACCC also works to support and accelerate the low-carbon energy transition.

BACCC seeks an enthusiastic student to join our team as a Junior Coordinator, Research on a full-time basis for two months (May-June or July-August) this summer. This role is ideal for College or University students looking for a summer position.

Reporting to the BACCC Manager, the successful applicant will assist with a variety of research and analysis activities focused on low carbon buildings and the low-carbon energy transition in the Hamilton and Burlington region. This will include researching best practices in communities and in municipalities in achieving low carbon new construction or accelerating the low-carbon energy transition.

Successful applicants will be encouraged to consider in any of their activities how AI might support BACCC in these activities. Successful applicants will demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills, excellent organization, and a professional attitude. Successful applicants will be passionate about climate action and the ongoing initiatives necessary to decarbonize our communities.

BACCC is administratively housed at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. This position may work remotely within the GTHA, with occasional attendance on site for meetings or team-building activities.

Responsibilities

The Junior Coordinator, Research will assist with the following:

  • researching effective climate policy and programs, including on how the low carbon energy transition is progressing, how it is impacting residents both positively and negatively;
  • conducting research with a view to ensuring that equity-deserving communities are prioritized;
  • collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data relating to energy usage and emissions from buildings, transportation, industry, and/or energy generation;
  • collecting data about new construction industry leaders and how they are transitioning to energy efficiency, electrification and/or low-carbon heating and cooling systems;
  • ensuring efficient and proper handling of research data and citations;
  • using AI, digital systems, tools and applications to support research and updates to research on climate action, policy, and initiatives, with a focus on the low-carbon energy transition;
  • drafting reports or policy briefs;
  • providing information to community partners and stakeholders on BACCC’s work and climate action;
  • using digital systems, tools and applications to share information on climate action, policy, and initiatives;
  • staying current on climate news and local climate action; and
  • and other tasks as may be assigned from time-to-time.

Qualifications

  • Strong communication, writing and editing skills
  • Strong research skills, including critical analysis skills for determining the truth and accuracy of AI-generated information
  • Knowledge and understanding of social media engagement
  • Experience translating technical data and secondary research into user-friendly, plain language information
  • An understanding and commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusivity
  • Ability to work independently in a remote working environment
  • Familiarity with the Hamilton and Burlington area, local issues and organizations is an asset
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence tools and experience in using AI for effective, accurate research, task automation and/or monitoring current events is an asset
  • Experience translating reports and information into materials that are easily accessible for residents with language barriers or other learning or comprehension challenges is an asset
  • Experience with content management solutions and/or website maintenance is an asset
  • Current enrollment in an educational program, or graduation from an educational program within 12 months prior to the start date, is a requirement

In addition, this position is dependent on funding through the federal Canada Summer Jobs Grant program and requires the successful candidate to:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

Compensation Details*:

  • Start Date: May 11, 2026 OR July 6, 2026
  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • 35 hours per week
  • $19.10/hr
