Climate Action Grant Writer

Position: Part-time Grant Writer

Fresh Outlook Foundation is looking for an experienced and successful part-time grant writer to raise funds for its Climate Action Ripple Effect (CARE) program, where students collaborate with community mentors to create projects in support of municipal climate objectives and UN SDGs. In 2025, almost 1,000 teachers, students, and mentors created more than 200 projects in Vernon, BC and the Central Okanagan.


RFP: Part-Time Contract Grant Writer for Climate Action Ripple Effect (CARE)

1 . Introduction

The Fresh Outlook Foundation (FOF) ─ a registered charity founded in 2007 and based in Vernon, BC ─ delivers the Climate Action Ripple Effect (CARE) program in School District 22 (Vernon) and School District 23 (Central Okanagan).

CARE is a climate-focused education and community engagement program where students from grades 6-12 collaborate with community mentors to create inquiry-focused projects in support of municipal climate objectives and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In 2025, almost 1,000 teachers, students, and mentors built more than 200 projects that were displayed at CARE expos in Vernon and Kelowna. CARE Community Impact Awards were given to student teams with plans for relevant, viable, and impactful projects to implement in their schools or communities.

Interest in expanding CARE depth, reach, and impact is strong, meaning we must secure increased funding and more longer-term support from foundations, local governments, government agencies, and corporate partners committed to supporting local climate action by educating and engaging youth and community.

2. Grantwriting Objectives

The contracted part-time grant writer will work with the CARE team to identify, develop, and submit compelling grant proposals that support the growth of CARE. Key objectives are to:

  • Increase fundraising capacity
  • Build robust and lasting relationships with existing and potential funders
  • Increase ‘marketability’ to funders by showcasing CARE’s program quality, success, and impacts on youth and communities
  • Increase fundraising success, particularly for multi-year grants and sponsorships

3. Scope of Work

  • Review existing grants that support CARE programming and events
  • Gather input from CARE team on potential grants identified by other nonprofit and government organizations
  • Research and identify relevant climate action grant opportunities from public and private sources, including but not limited to foundations, government agencies, and corporations
  • Contact potential grant organizations to determine fit for CARE
  • Develop grant calendar with submission deadlines and reporting requirements
  • Draft, edit, and finalize grant proposals tailored to each funder’s guidelines and priorities
  • Assist in creating budgets and supporting materials as required by funders
  • Ensure timely submission of grant applications and supporting documents
  • Support reporting requirements for awarded grants, including narrative and financial reports
  • Maintain organized records of proposals, submitted applications, and outcomes
  • Check in regularly with CARE team

4. Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in successful grant writing for nonprofit organizations (familiarity with the funding landscape for climate action, environmental education, or youth programs is an asset)
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills with attention to detail and clarity
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate remotely with a small, passionate team
  • Experience developing project budgets and understanding financial reporting requirements
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Fresh Outlook Foundation, CARE, and youth climate action

5. Proposal Requirements

Interested applicants should submit a proposal containing the following elements:

  • Cover letter expressing interest and summarizing relevant experience
  • Résumé or CV detailing professional background and grant writing successes
  • Portfolio of funded grant proposals (at least two examples, redacted for confidentiality as needed)
  • References from at least two previous clients or employers
  • Estimated number of hours available per month and hourly rate ($50-$75/hr), or project-based availability and pricing
  • Any specific expertise in climate action, education, or youth programming would be an asset

6. Schedule

  • RFP Issue Date: July 15, 2025
  • Deadline for Questions: July 22, 2025 (to jo@freshoutlookfoundation.org)
  • Proposal Due Date: July 29, 2025
  • Selection of Grant Writer: August 12, 2025
  • Anticipated Contract Start Date: August 19, 2025

7. Evaluation Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Relevant experience and demonstrated track record of successful grant writing for the nonprofit sector
  • Quality of writing and proposal materials
  • Alignment with organizational mission and values
  • References and portfolio
  • Fee structure and value for money
