Climate change, Climate organizing

Position: Climate Organizer - Coal Campaign
Organization: Stand.earth
Location: Vancouver, BC

Stand.earth is hiring a Climate Organizer to play a key role in securing a commitment from the Canadian federal government to phasing out thermal coal exports. This position, which is a one year fixed-term role based in Vancouver BC, will sit inside our Canada Oil & Gas campaign team and carry out work on our coal campaign in partnership with Ecojustice, along with other oil and gas infrastructure organizing work as needed.

You will be joining an international team of strategists, negotiators, campaigners, and activists that achieves outsized results and is bursting with creativity, innovation, and untapped potential.

We encourage applicants to apply by February 8. This position is open until filled.

About Stand.earth:

Stand.earth is a nonprofit environmental organization working to create a world where respect for people and the environment comes first.

Our campaigns challenge destructive corporate and governmental practices, demand accountability, and create solutions that support all of us — and the environment and climate upon which we depend. Stand’s strategic approach and fierce determination have yielded extraordinary results: Since 2000, we’ve secured the protection of millions of acres of wilderness, shifted billions of dollars of corporate purchasing toward responsible options, and transformed the environmental practices of more than 100 major U.S. corporations. Stand.earth operates in the United States and Canada.

Stand recognizes and respects the sovereignty of First Nations and tribes, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities. These communities are often first and most directly impacted by environmental pollution and climate change, and they provide critical leadership in developing solutions.

Pollution, climate change, and corporations’ bad behavior disproportionately hurts the most marginalized people in society — including people of colour, people from working class backgrounds, people with disabilities, women and LGBTQ+ people. To develop transformative solutions, these communities must be centered in the work we do. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other historically marginalized communities. If you require assistance applying to this opportunity, please contact equalopportunity@stand.earth .

The Position

This position will play a key role in building and mobilizing a local organizing network to secure a clear and binding commitment from the federal government to phase out Canada’s thermal coal exports by 2030.

The Climate Organizer will support and empower volunteers, partner organizations, and impacted communities using effective organizing strategies, digital tools, training, and relationship-building. This role will focus on federal advocacy, public pressure, and coalition-based organizing to advance climate justice and protect communities impacted by coal transportation, and processing, for exporting. This position will also support the Canada Oil and Gas team on additional organizing responsibilities consistent with achieving its campaign goals.

This is a 1-year full-time fixed term position, with the possibility of a 1-year extension subject to campaign needs and performance. The starting salary range for the position is $67,275 to $87,750 CAD. Stand.earth offers a generous and comprehensive benefits package including excellent health and dental insurance, 4 weeks paid vacation, 20 paid holidays, and a 4-day work week. We also encourage employees to make use of our mindfulness sessions that we offer. All staff can expect to travel periodically for in-person team meetings, retreats, and work events.

The location for this position is fully remote and the candidate must reside in Greater Vancouver, British Columbia. For this position, candidates will be required to attend in-person organizing, meetings, and actions in the Vancouver area and other key locations in Southern British Columbia as needed.
