Climate Justice, Climate Action

Position: Campus Organizer
Organization: Change Course
Location: Ideal candidate would be based in British Columbia, but we welcome others to apply. Remote with some in-person work and travel required.

We are hiring a Campus Organizer to support our on campus organizing program, with a particular strategic focus on organizing students on campuses in British Columbia. The Campus Organizer will support students to leverage collective power on campus to move financiers of the climate crisis to meet climate targets necessary for a transition to a net-zero economy and to respect Indigenous rights. As the work develops, the Campus Organizer will be responsible for developing new targets and strategic focuses on university campuses.

This position reports to the Executive Director, will coordinate closely with the current Campus Organizer, and be a key member of a small team. The successful candidate will have a passion for climate justice and the ways in which student-led and university organizing has the potential to lead to major systemic change. Campus organizing is at the core of the work we do, as we seek to empower students to take on big targets, knowing they can win and make effective change.

As Campus Organizer you’ll have the chance to:

  • Work with and build on Change Course’s ongoing and successful ‘RBC Off Campus’ campaign
  • Support a network of groups at 15+ universities advocating for big banks to stop funding fossil fuels and violating Indigenous rights
  • Recruit and (re)build campus groups in British Columbia and the region, building solidarity with frontline communities resisting extraction on their territories in the province
  • Participate in a fast paced network of NGOs committed to moving big financial targets
  • Work with a small, dedicated, and dynamic team
  • Work closely with a second Campus Organizer to support students and develop strategy

This role includes:

Coaching student groups involved in the Banks Off Campus campaign

  • Working closely with a second Campus Organizer, collaborating on strategy, sharing knowledge and dividing responsibility for supporting campus groups
  • Target mapping and identification, including research into the climate finance sector and the presence of financiers on university campuses
  • Leadership development
  • Strategy development and supporting local groups in developing their timeline (in collaboration with the Change Course team)
  • Supporting grassroots groups in narrative development and telling the story of their campaign
  • Supporting with local groups’ recruitment and retention
  • Traveling to support campuses with in person training, mentorship and on the ground support
  • Holding regular coaching and check in meetings with local group leads to support the development and implementation of their campaign on their campus, and acting as local groups’ primary point of contact
  • Identifying, developing and offering trainings to student organizers e.g. canvassing, recruitment, action planning, media, etc.
  • On-boarding and recruiting new local groups, with a particular emphasis on BC

What we’re looking for in a candidate

We are looking for a young person who has experience with developing and executing local campaigns, strategy development, defining targets and power mapping. We are also looking for a candidate with strong connections in so-called British Columbia, who has demonstrated an ability to leverage relationships and knowledge of the BC-context to build or grow volunteer groups. The ideal candidate will have experience recruiting to build or rebuild groups of volunteers or students for a shared campaign. Experience organizing constituencies outside of “typical” self-selecting climate justice organizers is an asset. Having past experience or understanding of campus-specific organizing campaigns and contexts is an asset, and formal or informal coaching experience is crucial. We are looking for a candidate who knows how to think like their opponent, and can support in drafting strong campus specific strategies, within the framework of an overarching coordinated campaign arc. An ideal candidate will be familiar with Change Course’s campus campaigning work thus far and understand the role that financial institutions play in the ongoing climate crisis.

Change Course

Change Course (formerly Banking on a Better Future) is a youth-led organization that supports and trains university students to organize and leverage collective power to move large financial institutions to change course, and end their financial support for the expanding fossil fuel industry.

Founded in April of 2021 by members of Climate Strike Canada and the Divest Canada Coalition, we are fully youth-led and aim to support a movement that is for youth and by youth, that empowers young people across Canada to take on big targets and win. Our work is defined by a commitment to build trust and strong relationships with the volunteer groups we work with, and work closely alongside them rather than direct.

Employment Equity

We believe our work is stronger when it benefits from the experience, knowledge and wisdom of people who have faced systemic barriers. People with disabilities, women, Indigenous peoples, members of racialized groups and members of other historically marginalized communities are encouraged to apply.

If you would like to be considered for employment equity please indicate this on your covering letter by including the statement “I would like to be considered for employment equity.” No further elaboration is necessary, but you are free to add more information if you would like. Where candidates don’t differ significantly in terms of other desired qualifications, priority will be given to those being considered for employment equity.
