Buildings Assistant

The Buildings Assistant supports the safe care, maintenance, and operation of all buildings and related infrastructure at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre. This is a hands-on role that combines regular weekday maintenance work with scheduled weekend on-call coverage. The Assistant performs building inspections, maintenance, and repairs, and serves as the primary contact for urgent building-related issues during assigned on-call weekends.

SCHEDULE & COMMITMENT

  • Regular five-day work week.
  • Schedule arranged to ensure 2–3 weekends per month of coverage.
  • On on-call weekends, the schedule will typically be Friday to Tuesday, or Wednesday to Sunday.
  • On long weekends, the schedule may include holiday Mondays.
  • While on-site, the Assistant will focus on hands-on building and maintenance tasks. During on-call periods, the Assistant will also be the point of contact for urgent building issues, alarms, or emergencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promptly address and resolve urgent maintenance issues.
  • Provide as-needed, as-available emergency response to building issues and alerts, including being part of the fire monitoring contact list.
  • Carry out general maintenance and repair of premises (inside and outside, including entrance areas), which may include custodial or seasonal/winter maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain, repair, assemble/disassemble, and/or move furnishings as assigned.
  • Assist with maintenance and operation of building heating, cooling, ventilation, and air-filtration systems.
  • Maintain orderly, safe, and clean work and equipment areas, ensuring tools and materials are organized and ready for use.
  • Review available WHMIS/SDS information and update as needed.
  • Complete and document monthly fire safety inspections of all IJC buildings; inform Property Manager of follow-up actions required.
  • Assist with water treatment systems, including preparing and delivering water samples to the laboratory.
  • Assist with reading and recording water meters and following up as needed.
  • Meet service providers, trades, contractors, and vendors on site, in support of the Property Manager.
  • Assist the Property Manager in identifying building and infrastructure needs.
  • Provide input to the Property Manager on developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and improving buildings operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in building maintenance, facility operations, or a related field.
  • Comfortable interacting with contractors, trades, vendors, and the public.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage emergencies with sound judgment.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Trained Person certification for water system (or willingness to obtain within reasonable timeframe).
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • WHMIS certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
