Type: age 30 & under / summer
Organization: Georgia Strait Alliance
Location: Victoria BC / Hybrid
Hours: full-time

For 35 years, Georgia Strait Alliance has played a leading role in bringing communities together to address the many threats to the Salish Sea. We are excited to be growing our team at a time of positive change and evolution in our organization.

Through the generous funding from Canada Summer Jobs, we are hiring a summer Clean Marine BC Assistant.

  • Compensation: $24.00/hour, plus vacation pay and sick leave
  • Preferred start date: May 25, 2026
  • Position duration: 34 hours per week; 8 weeks per Canada Summer Jobs requirements
  • Please note: Interviews will be held on a rolling basis as qualified applicants are received, so please apply early. We operate from Monday-Thursday but the position requires weekend and evening availability
  • Eligibility: Due to funding restriction, the successful applicant must be 30 years or younger on the date of hiring; hold Canadian citizenship, permanent resident, or refugee status; and be able to work in the federal electoral riding of Victoria.

About the position:

Working closely with our Clean Marine BC Coordinator and Campaigns Manager, you will support community outreach activities, our Dock Walking Program, create social media and other communication assets, and update important facets of our program, among other duties. The team has a wide range of roles and depending on needs and availability you may be asked to assist in campaign specific or GSA public outreach.

The outreach portion of the role will be focused on engagement with boaters in the Victoria riding and surrounding areas at docks, marinas, yacht clubs, and any boating related events to distribute our Clean Boater Kits and Guide to Clean Boating, and to conduct our Boater Survey. Candidates will be trained and versed to help educate boaters about the resources and to gain a better understanding of clean boating principles. This will involve maintaining a detailed inventory log of outreach materials, alongside other administrative tasks. The position requires some storage space at your home for outreach materials, including a few larger boxes. Our colleagues in Victoria can provide additional storage as the main location for the materials, with coordination needed for access.

You will also support the creation of social media content for both GSA and CMBC, including graphics, short educational posts, and visual storytelling that highlights our outreach work.

This role will involve contributing photos, captions, and draft materials for blogs, newsletters, and other digital communications to help amplify our programs across GSA’s platforms.

You may also assist with general GSA communications needs, such as preparing graphics for campaigns or helping shape messaging for broader community engagement.

This position will require some flexibility of your schedule to work some weekends and evenings in order to attend boating and other GSA related events with detailed documentation and planning of your hours. Travel may be offered if feasible and based upon the budget. The successful candidate will also be required to attend all weekly staff meetings virtually. Work days are subject to change depending on weather conditions and you will be provided with safety needs.

You will do great in this position if you are interested in best practices for boaters, biodiversity and ecosystem protection, community engagement, inclusivity and diversity, and are able to take initiative, particularly in starting and maintaining conversation with folks. Having a keen sense of working as a team, enjoying creating engaging content for socials and web design, use of digital platforms, and attention to detail are also important. If you are eager to talk to people about important environmental and boating issues, you would be a great addition to the team!

Experience and Qualifications:

We understand that not all experience looks the same, and encourage applicants to share how their experiences relate to the qualities below:

  • Ability to engage and connect with folks of diverse backgrounds
  • Taking initiative and willingness to talk with people in a variety of ways, including in person, by phone, and email (e.g. approach folks proactively, try different greetings to see which ones work best, etc.)
  • Ability to participate in, help plan, and prepare for tabling at public events
  • Help develop educational posts and graphics through the creation of content, including taking photos of engagement activities for blogs, emails, and social media.
  • Digital skills, organization, and attention to detail in order to effectively compile and enter data, track activities and inventory in spreadsheets, communicate online, and assemble Clean Boater Kits in a standard and consistent format.

It would also be helpful if you have any of the following skills, qualifications or equivalent experiences, though they are by no means required:

  • Boating experience and/ or training
  • A Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate
  • Candidates with fluency in languages other than English, Indigenous people, and those from racialized and/or marginalized communities, and facing obstacles to participation including people with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Any environmental, community engagement, or marine background experience

Location: The position requires a combination of work done at home/remote, and in the field.

About Georgia Strait Alliance:

GSA is focused on protecting the health of the marine environment of the Salish Sea, and the coastal communities that call this region home. Grounded in environmental justice, Georgia Strait Alliance mobilizes and supports collective action to protect the Salish Sea region. We do this by:

  • Building and activating community power through relationship development and capacity building;
  • Fostering systems transformation by advocating for community-led initiatives;
  • Connecting people and place through engagement and awareness building; and,
  • Strengthening organizational health and equity by creating a supportive and safe working environment

Our values of collaboration, caring, courage, accountability, and interconnectedness guide us as we work toward our vision, and the spirit of ‘alliances’ that our founders nurtured is still present within GSA and in the way we work to protect this region.

We are committed to ensuring that our mission is one that is inclusive of all communities and people, and we look forward to the CMBC Assistant joining us on this ongoing journey and bringing their unique perspective to our team.

Most of the staff at GSA work from their home offices on the unceded territories of many Coast Salish Nations, and our office is located on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) people (known as Vancouver).
