Position: Ecologist/Biologist, Species Identification Specialists
Organization: Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society-OV
Location: anywhere in Eastern Ontario
3 bioblitz events: July 19-21 (Calabogie), Aug. 16-18 (Griffith), Sept. 20-22 (Matawatchan).

Who we are

CPAWS-OV is a registered environmental charity working towards the conservation of public lands in the Ottawa River watershed. Our goals include protecting biodiversity and species habitats, promoting ecological connectivity and nature-based solutions, and ensuring Indigenous Rights and values are upheld. We also seek to improve awareness and education on conservation issues and improve access to nature for all people. We currently have several ongoing conservation projects in both Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. This position falls under our Madawaska Highlands project which seeks to protect at least 30% of the region. We have found that there is a lack of data available for the region, especially data on species and biodiversity. We plan to begin to remedy this by hosting a series of citizen science bioblitzes in the Madawaska Highlands – which is where you come in!

CPAWS-OV is looking for experienced individuals in ecology and species identification to help us out with our citizen science bioblitzes happening this summer and early fall.

We have 3 contract positions open for a total of 20 hours at a rate of $30/hour. If there is a need for additional hours, you will be compensated at the same rate. If candidates are experienced in species identification of multiple groups (i.e. birds, plants, insects, etc.), you are welcome to apply for multiple positions.

We will be organizing 3 bioblitz events in the next few months in the Madawaska Highlands region. The dates are as follows: July 19-21 (Calabogie), Aug. 16-18 (Griffith), Sept. 20-22 (Matawatchan). Each event will have its own theme (for example plants, birds, amphibians, etc.) and we are looking for 3 experts in different fields to correspond with each theme. Therefore, you would only need to commit to one of the above weekends. We will finalize the themes after determining availability of candidates.

We are looking for experts in any of the following fields (if your field of specialty isn't listed, we encourage you to still apply):

  • Botany/dendrology
  • Entomology
  • Ornithology
  • Mycology
  • Aquatic ecology

The bioblitz events will take place over the course of a weekend with two nights of camping overnight (arriving Friday afternoon, departing Sunday afternoon). The successful candidate will be expected to stay for the duration of the entire bioblitz event (Friday to Sunday of the respective weekend). For transportation to and from the event, we can provide carpooling from Ottawa or reimburse you for your mileage. Meals will be provided, and we are happy to accommodate any allergies or dietary restrictions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist volunteers with species identification. We would like volunteers to leave with a basic understanding of species identification such as different features/patterns to look out for and defining traits of certain species.
  • Assist with inputting species data into iNaturalist and helping fill out physical data collection sheets as a backup.

  • Ability to identify most species in a given category (i.e. birds, plants, etc.) by sight and sound (if applicable). Ability to identify species by tracks, scat, nests is also an asset.
  • Previous experience with performing species surveys and collecting data in the field.
  • Comfortable with camping, heat, rain, and bugs.
  • Previous experience with teaching or engaging with volunteers is considered an asset but not required.
