Position: Teaching Mechanic
Type: age 30 & under / summer

• Job type: Full time, 35 hours/week
• Approximate schedule: Monday through Friday, some evening hours
• Employment start date: Monday May 4 OR Monday June 29
• Contract duration: 8 weeks

The organization:

Bikechain is a non-profit, Do-It-Yourself bicycle repair centre serving University of Toronto and the general public.

We operate an educational repair space with affordable mechanic support, offer a free bicycle borrowing program for U of T students, host bicycle related events and workshops, lead dedicated programming prioritizing cyclists on the margins, and offer mobility device repair assistance. Bikechain’s mission is to promote the use of bicycles as sustainable transportation, and to provide affordable cycling and bike repair education to the community.

Who is eligible?

This position is funded by the Government of Canada through the Canada Summer Jobs program. To apply for this job, you must:

• Be aged between 15 and 30 years old on the start date of the job;
• Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN); and
• Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
• International students and other temporary residents of Canada are not eligible.

Bikechain seeks to transform the culture of cycling, and prioritizes applicants who self-identify as being part of underrepresented groups, or who face barriers in cycling and employment. This includes, but is not limited to, Indigenous youth, racialized youth, Black youth, youth with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQI+ youth.

Key responsibilities:

• Teaching repair skills and supporting patrons to complete bicycle repairs as part of our Do-It-Yourself bicycle repair programming
• Supporting the bike lending program: checking bikes in and out, completing routine bicycle maintenance
• Assisting the Shop Manager and Executive Director with day-to-day operations of the shop
• Supervising volunteers
• Refurbishing secondhand bicycles for sale or donation
• Supporting Bikechain’s Women / Trans / Non-Binary hours (if applicable)
• Leading group bike rides as needed

• Supporting Bikechain events as needed
• Support Bikechain’s outreach efforts as coordinated by the Program & Outreach Manager
• Other duties as assigned by the Shop Manager or the Executive Director

Qualifications:

• Must be between 15 and 30 years on the start date of the position
• Some experience in bicycle mechanics, or an interest and willingness to learn
• Desire to help others learn about bicycle mechanics and cycling
• Demonstrated patience and a friendly demeanour
• Demonstrated punctuality and reliability in opening and closing procedures
• Ability to work within and maintain an anti-oppressive environment

Assets, but not required:

• Previous experience working or volunteering with Bikechain, other DIY bike spaces, traditional bike shops, or cycling-focused organizations
• Previous experience working or volunteering with environmental organizations, campus groups, grassroots community work, and/or nonprofit organizations
• Experience working with vulnerable populations
• Ability to speak additional languages (especially Mandarin Chinese)
