Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative

The Great Bear Initiative Society (a non-profit society under the BC Societies Act), also known as Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative (CFN-GBI), is an alliance of First Nations on the North Pacific Coast that includes the Gitga’at, Gitxaała, Haida, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo Xai’xais, Metlakatla, Nuxalk and Wuikinuxv First Nations.

CFN-GBI is dedicated to improving the quality of life for its members across the coast by creating new jobs and sustainable economic opportunities, while protecting the Great Bear Rainforest — the largest and most ecologically significant temperate rainforest in the world.

Great Bear First Nations Foundation

The Great Bear First Nations Foundation (GBFNF) is a newly established charity that works in close alignment with CFN-GBI and its member Nations, supporting shared priorities through education, stewardship and capacity building. As an independent charity, the Foundation mobilizes funding and partnerships to advance this work in ways that are consistent with its own charitable purposes.

Purpose Summary:

Great Bear First Nations Foundation (GBFNF) is seeking proposals from communications professionals to provide communications coordination support across digital, social, editorial, event, donor, and storytelling activities. The selected contractor will help GBFNF plan, produce, monitor, archive, and report on communications activities in alignment with organization’s voice, values, communications protocols, and brand standards.

Scope of Work:

The selected consultant will be responsible for the following areas of work:

A. Communications Planning and Content Production

  • Develop, draft, and coordinate social media, newsletter, website, and campaign content in collaboration with GBFNF staff.
  • Maintain a communications calendar in HubSpot aligned with organizational priorities, programs, fundraising initiatives, campaigns, and events.
  • Draft newsletter content, including story summaries, links, graphics, and related materials.
  • Create website content, social media posts, graphics, and short-form video content that amplify stories, initiatives, and news relevant to GBFNF audiences.
  • Adapt long-form content into engaging digital formats suitable for social media, email, and web channels.
  • Monitor developments affecting member Nations and communities through relevant news, events, and information sources.
  • Ensure communications materials reflect approved messaging, brand standards, and communications objectives.
  • Provide content plans and campaign materials for review by designated GBFNF representatives.

B. Digital Communications and Community Management

  • Monitor audience engagement across GBFNF digital channels, including comments, direct messages, reviews, and mentions.
  • Respond to audience inquiries and engagement in accordance with agreed-upon communications protocols.
  • Identify, report, and moderate spam, abusive, discriminatory, or otherwise inappropriate content in accordance with GBFNF community guidelines.
  • Support relationship-building with member Nations, partners, and community organizations through appropriate digital engagement activities.
  • Identify opportunities for user-generated content and permissions-based content sharing.
  • Implement audience growth strategies and apply current social media best practices to increase reach and engagement.
  • Monitor social media trends and recommend opportunities for improvement.

C. Story Gathering and Donor Communications

  • Coordinate with program staff, storytellers, partners, and community representatives to gather stories, quotes, images, testimonials, and updates.
  • Support respectful, accurate, and culturally appropriate representation of member Nations and communities in communications materials.
  • Develop donor-facing communications materials, including impact stories, presentations, website content, campaign materials, invitations, appeals, updates, and follow-up communications.
  • Collaborate with the Development Manager to align storytelling and communications activities with fundraising priorities and donor engagement objectives.

D. Reporting, Evaluation, and Records Management

  • Monitor and evaluate newsletter, website, social media, and campaign performance using agreed-upon metrics.
  • Maintain communications performance reports and provide regular updates on communications activities, deliverables, and outcomes.
  • Identify trends and provide recommendations to improve content performance and audience engagement.
  • Maintain organized records and archives of communications materials, including newsletters, social media content, photographs, stories, testimonials, and related assets.
  • Maintain routine backups of communications content and associated digital records, where applicable.

E. Coordination and Meetings

  • Participate in meetings reasonably required to support the delivery of services under this Agreement.
  • Provide periodic updates regarding project status, deliverables, timelines, and emerging communications opportunities or issues.
  • Perform other communications-related services mutually agreed to by the Parties and consistent with the objectives of this Scope of Work.

Terms of Engagement:

  • The Communications Coordinator will be an independent contractor to the Great Bear Initiative Society. The successful contractor is expected to work from their own office and to provide the equipment necessary to conduct this work, including a computer and software, wireless access, and cell phone.
  • Contract period: August 2026 – March 2027
  • Expected Time Commitment: 2 days per week
  • Contract Amount: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
  • Location: Contractor to be located in British Columbia
  • Travel: Up to 5% travel to the BC coast
