Join Our Team at the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation!

Positions: Animal Care Worker/ Service Dispatcher/ Education Assistant
Organization: Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation
Location: Madden, near Calgary, Alberta. On-site positions only: Please apply only if you live in Alberta or are able to relocate for the duration of the contract.

The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) has been dedicated to rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife since 1993. Accredited by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, AIWC serves Calgary and southern Alberta, caring for over 2,000 animals annually—from hummingbirds to deer fawns. As a registered charity, we rely on donations and dedicated volunteers to support our mission.

In 2026, AIWC is seeking motivated youth (ages 18–30) for full-time, temporary roles at our wildlife hospital northwest of Calgary.

Multiple positions are available: Service Dispatcher, Educational Assistant, and Animal Care Worker.


Summary of Available Positions & Duties

Service Dispatcher (12-week contract, start times vary)

  • Answer hotline calls and emails, providing accurate and compassionate wildlife education.
  • Rescue and transport injured and orphaned wildlife to the AIWC facility.
  • Coordinate and dispatch volunteers for wildlife rescues.
  • Educate the public during rescue assignments.
  • Perform administrative duties as required.

Educational Assistant (8–16-week contract, start times vary)

  • Lead outreach booths and deliver wildlife education programs.
  • Research educational techniques and assist with online resource development.
  • Create short educational social media posts every 1–2 weeks.
  • Assist with coordinating Wildlife Hotline calls and other educational inquiries.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Animal Care Worker (16-week contract, start times vary)

  • Assist hospital staff with animal care, including preparing food, feeding, cleaning, and setting up enclosures.
  • Care for baby birds and other patients.
  • Maintain patient records.
  • Support animal rescues, transport, and releases.
  • Perform housekeeping duties and other facility maintenance as required.
  • Answer and direct Wildlife Hotline calls.

Qualifications (all positions)

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Highly efficient, adaptable, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, variable-shift environment.
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated, quick learner with a strong work ethic.
  • Tetanus vaccination is required; rabies vaccination is an asset but not mandatory.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Knowledge of Alberta wildlife and natural history is beneficial but not required.
  • To comply with grant specifications, applicants must:
    • Be between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.

    • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

    • Have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada.

    • Note: International students are not eligible.


Remuneration & Schedule (all positions)

  • Wage: $18.00 per hour.
  • Schedule: 35 hours per week. Flexible schedules may include variable shifts, evenings, weekends, or Tuesday–Saturday, depending on the position.
