We are becoming a registered not-for-profit society and are seeking five to seven members to join our volunteer, working board.

Call for Volunteer Board Directors - Safer Steps Chebucto (Society) (Formerly Safer Steps Sambro Loop)

Safer Steps Chebucto is a community-driven initiative working to make it safe and accessible for people of all ages and abilities to walk, run, roll, and move through the Chebucto communities and connecting routes, through advocacy for safer infrastructure, appropriate speeds, supportive policy, and public education.

As we incorporate as a not-for-profit society, we are seeking 5–7 volunteer Board Directors to help guide and grow this work.

This is a working board. Directors contribute both to governance and to hands-on efforts such as community engagement, advocacy, outreach, and strategic planning.

Who We’re Looking For:

We are seeking people who:

  • Have strong connections to one or more Chebucto communities, including:
    • Purcell’s Cove / Herring Cove / Spryfield

    • Harrietsfield / Williamswood

    • Sambro / Sambro Creek

    • East Pennant / West Pennant

    • Sambro Head / Ketch Harbour

    • Duncan’s Cove / Portuguese Cove / Bear Cove / Halibut Bay

  • Care deeply about pedestrian safety, accessibility, and community wellbeing
  • Are collaborative, respectful, and community-minded
  • Are willing to contribute time and thought to both strategy and action

We welcome a mix of lived experience and professional expertise, including (but not limited to) backgrounds in:

Urban or rural planning, transportation or engineering, public policy, public health, law, finance, communications, marketing, volunteer coordination, community organizing, accessibility, or education.

What the Role Involves

  • Serving a two-year renewable term on a volunteer Board
  • Attending monthly Board meetings (standing time to be set collectively)
  • Helping guide priorities, strategy, and advocacy
  • Supporting and leading community engagement and outreach in your jurisdiction/area
  • Working collaboratively with a broader volunteer working group
  • Upholding strong values around respect, inclusion, transparency, and evidence-based, non-partisan advocacy

Board members may also serve in officer roles such as Vice-President, Treasurer, or Secretary (Minute-Taker), based on interest and skill.
