Treasurer Position / Non-profit Board Position

Position: Treasurer
Type: non-profit board / unpaid
Organization: Calgary's Nature Kindergarten / Children's Commons Ecological Society
Location: Calgary, Alberta (Remote with an in-person meeting ever 6 months)

In 2015 CCES founded Calgary’s first Nature Kindergarten offering the Alberta Kindergarten curriculum through learner-led exploration of the natural world. It is a government-approved and publicly-funded kindergarten, in which children will spend the majority of their days exploring and learning in nature. It is the first in Calgary and one of only a few operating across Canada.

Treasurer Position

The CCES Board is a hands-on working board and operates with a spirit of helpfulness. Where other members have a particular skill set, interest or ability we aim to work together, often crossing roles, to help one another out, manage workload and move the organization forward. The CCES Board requests a 2-year minimum commitment to help ensure effective succession planning.

Benefits:

  • Being on the CCES Board is an opportunity to work with like-minded people that are committed to know the benefits of connecting children to nature.
  • It is a chance to learn more about the inner workings of the education system and gain some professional development experience.
  • Being on the Board does guarantee automatic placement within the kindergarten and also counts as your parental required volunteer hours.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the overall responsibilities of the board
  • Regularly attending monthly board meetings and other occasional essential meetings; the Board of Directors meets once per month for 2 hours per meeting usually mid week in the evening from 6:00-8:00 pm. Due to the small size of the board it is essential that everyone attend to ensure quorum and robust discussion of issues
  • Supporting overall Board on fiduciary responsibilities
  • Recommending and reviewing financial policies and internal controls
  • Liaison with auditors, including preparation of reports to be sent to auditors and draft financial statements
  • Submission of audited financial statements and budgets to Alberta Education;
  • Presentation of audited financial statements at the Annual General Meeting
  • Liaison with bookkeeper as questions arise

Skills required:

  • Experience working with financial information, controls and budgeting
  • Be impartial and able to clearly articulate financial information: procedures, processes and ability to explain in plain language outcome implications
  • Have a financial qualification or relevant experience, including preparation of financial statements
  • Understanding of financial accounting for not-for-profit organizations is helpful
  • Ability to ensure decisions are taken and followed-up
  • Be available to be contacted for ad hoc advice
