Position Summary:

The Jijuktu’kwejk Watershed Alliance (JWA) is a non-profit charitable organization, led by a passionate team of like-minded individuals who are working together to foster a healthy, swimmable, and fishable Jijuktu’kwejk (Cornwallis) Watershed.

We would love to welcome you to the team and work together to achieve this mission!

The Volunteer Treasurer plays a key role in overseeing the financial health of the Jijuktu’kwejk Watershed Alliance, ensuring transparency and accountability in how we manage and report our funds. This remote, part-time volunteer position requires just a few hours per month and works closely with our Board of Directors and external Bookkeeper to guide budgeting, financial planning, and grant fund allocation in support of our mission to restore, protect, and steward the Cornwallis River watershed.

The JWA has had an annual budget ranging from $75,000 to $100,000 for the past three years, largely supported by grants from funders and all levels of government. The organization supports 2-4 summer students each year, and starting in 2025 has supported a full-time permanent Operations Manager position. The JWA is currently working on its first strategic plan to guide the work but annual reports can be found on the website (jijuktukwejkwatershedalliance.wordpress.com)

Governance & Compliance

  • Provide financial updates to the Board of Directors at monthly or bi-monthly meetings.
  • Support the preparation and review of financial reports for funders and year-end filings, led by our professional Bookkeeper and with support from the Board of Directors.
  • Help ensure compliance with applicable financial policies, grant requirements, and Canada Revenue Agency standards.

Support & Collaboration

  • Work closely with our Board, bookkeeper, and Operations Manager to strengthen financial systems and sustainability.
  • Contribute to financial planning for fundraising and strategic initiatives.
  • Provide guidance on potential risks or improvements related to financial management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of basic accounting principles and financial reports.
  • Ability to review budgets and financial statements with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Commitment to environmental sustainability and community-based work.
  • Previous experience as a treasurer or board member is an asset.

Time Commitment & Work Style:

This is a remote volunteer position requiring an estimated 5-10 hours per month (approx. 10h per month during field season May-September). Most work can be completed on a flexible schedule, though attendance at monthly or bi-monthly Board meetings (via MS Teams) is encouraged. The Treasurer will have full support from the Board of Directors and our professional Bookkeeper.
