Stop Bill 5

“Bill 5 would repeal Ontario's Endangered Species Act, ending most meaningful protections for endangered, threatened and special-concern species. Habitat protections would be limited to a species’ immediate dwelling place (like a den or a nest) but not the surrounding forests or wetlands it depends on for food. Decisions about which species are endangered or threatened would be made by government cabinet ministers instead of scientists.” – Environmental Defence (full story)

“The Ontario government quietly tabled Bill 5: the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act. The Bill would repeal the Endangered Species Act, leaving in its place a shell that contains no meaningful rules for species protection.  The Bill would also hand virtually unlimited power to the Provincial Cabinet, through the proposed Special Economic Zones Act. Let’s be clear: Bill 5 is a threat to Ontario’s land, wildlife, and democracy.” – EcoJustice (full story)
