Non-profit Board Positions

Role: Volunteer Board Member
Type: non-profit board members (unpaid)
Organization: Native Bee Society of BC
Location: anywhere in BC

The Native Bee Society of BC (NBSBC) is looking for passionate volunteers living in British Columbia to join our dedicated Board of Directors. You don’t need prior expertise in native bees—what matters most is your enthusiasm and commitment to supporting the Society’s mission.

Onboarding and training will be provided.

Executive Member – Co-Chair

Co-Chair is a key position; they guide the overall direction of the Board. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in non-profit leadership within a collaborative environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting board operations, such as scheduling and recording monthly meetings
  • Managing memberships and ensuring smooth organizational processes
  • Assisting with additional tasks as needed to keep the Society running effectively

Member-at-Large – Fundraising

Fundraising plays a vital role in helping us grow. We are looking for someone to guide us as we pursue registered charity status, and who has experience and/or passion for fundraising to:

  • Lead and support fundraising initiatives, including grants, campaigns, donations, sponsorships, and events
  • Work alongside fellow board members and volunteers to secure resources for programs, including the BC Bee Atlas
  • Contribute creativity and enthusiasm in promoting the Society’s work

Member-at-Large – Equity, Diversity, Decolonization & Inclusion (EDDI)

We’re committed to ensuring that the Society reflects the diversity of BC communities and native bees. Help us identify strengths and gaps in inclusion. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure people of all identities, abilities, and backgrounds feel welcome and represented
  • Support initiatives that make learning about bee diversity accessible to everyone

Member-at-Large – Academic Liaison

This new role focuses on building and strengthening connections with academic institutions. It is well-suited for someone with academic experience or strong networks in the research community who is eager to bridge science and conservation practice. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing relationships with graduate labs and researchers working in entomology, melittology, pollinators, and phenology
  • Supporting the BC Bee Atlas, which is currently undertaking taxonomic verification of tens of thousands of native bee samples across southern BC

Commitment

The NBSBC Board is a rewarding opportunity to join a community of people working to protect native bees in BC. Board members play a key role in supporting the Society’s mission by shaping the direction of our Society while supporting native bee conservation.

Time & Participation

The average commitment is 5+ volunteer hours per month throughout the year. This includes attending a monthly board meeting (1.5 hours) and contributing to committee work that aligns with your interests (3.5+ hours). Board members are expected to take on specific action items each month, balancing the evolving needs of the Society with their individual capacity.

Collaboration & Communication

Reliable internet access is important, as most of our collaboration happens remotely through Zoom, Slack, Google Drive, and email. We value teamwork—board members should be comfortable working independently, engaging in collaborative discussions, and helping guide the Society’s strategic direction.

Membership & Terms

All board members must be members in good standing with the Society and meet eligibility requirements under the BC Societies Act.

  • Member-at-Large positions require a 1-year term commitment (Nov 2025 → Nov 2026).
  • Co-Chair positions require a 2-year term commitment (Nov 2025 → Nov 2027).

How to apply

If you’re interested in joining the Board, we’d love to hear from you! Please submit an email to chair@bcnativebees.org with

  • A short bio and photo (to be shared on our Candidates page)
